Chase Sapphire Preferred: Earn 60k Ultimate Rewards + $300 travel credit

5

Chase has increased the welcome offer on one of it’s popular cards: the Sapphire Preferred (CSP). While the amount of Ultimate Rewards points awarded has remained the same at 60K after $4k in spend, there’s now the addition of a $300 travel credit as well.

However, unlike the $300 credit for the Sapphire Reserve card, which can be easily used towards almost any travel purchase, the one issued for the Sapphire Preferred’s welcome offer can only be used on bookings through Chase TravelSM, Chase’s online portal, which makes it somewhat less appealing.

This increased offer is already available via referrals, so if you’re in 2-player mode, you can get an extra 10,000 points by referring from someone in your household.

Quick Thoughts

Earning 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points and a $300 travel credit after $4,000 of spend is a pretty good offer, especially because the Sapphire Preferred also brings with it the ability to transfer to Ultimate Rewards travel partners if you don’t already have a premium card.

The CSP has been parked at 60,000 points for awhile now, so it’s nice to see things sweetening up a bit. This isn’t as good as the 80-85K offers that we saw earlier this year, but it’s still a $95 card with a first-year value of over $1,000 according to our Best Offers page. That puts it near the top of Chase’s current consumer card offers.

Note that there’s an offer giving 70,000 Ultimate Rewards when applying in a Chase branch. If you have any Chase locations near you, it might be worth the effort to apply via a banker in order to earn those 10,000 additional points. You can accomplish the same thing by using a referral as well, which is undoubtedly the way to go if you already have a Sapphire card in the house.

  • 5/24 Rule: You most likely will not get approved for a new card if you have opened 5 or more cards (with any bank) within the past 24 months. Most business cards do not count towards that five card total. Business cards that DO count include: TD Bank, Discover and the Capital One Spark Cash Select, Spark Miles and Spark Miles Select.
  • 24 Month Rule: If you’ve previously had a card before, you can only get a welcome offer on that card again if you no longer have the card AND if it has been more than 24 months since you last received a welcome offer for that card. This rule does not apply to the Sapphire Preferred and Reserve cards (see below). There can be exceptions with some business cards.
  • 48 Month Rule (Sapphire cards): If you’ve previously had either the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve cards, you can get the welcome offer for another Sapphire card only if you no longer have either card AND if it has been more than 48 months since you last received a welcome offer for the card.
  • Southwest "Family" Rules: In addition to Sapphire cards' 48-month rule, Chase applies additional "family" rules to the Southwest cards. You're not eligible for the welcome offer on a personal Southwest card if you currently have one, or if you've received a welcome offer on any personal Southwest card within the last 24 months. This doesn't apply to business cards. You also can't be approved for Southwest consumer card if you already have one open.
  • IHG "Family" Rules: You're not eligible for the welcome offer if you've received a welcome offer on any personal IHG card within the last 24 months. You also can't be approved another IHG consumer card if you already have one open.
  • 2 per month Rule: Most applicants are limited to 2 new cards per month. Business cards are usually limited to one per month.
  • Marriott cards: Approval for any Marriott card is governed by a labyrinthine set of unintuitive rules. You can see the full eligibility chart here.
  • Card Limits: Chase doesn't have a strict limit on the amount of cards that you can have, but it does place limits on the total amount of credit that they will issue you across all cards. Because of this, reconsideration can sometimes be successful by moving credit from one existing card to the new card that you want.
  • Application Status: Call (888) 338-2586 to check your application status.
  • Reconsideration: If denied, call (888) 270-2127 for personal cards, or (800) 453-9719 for business cards, and ask for your application to be reconsidered.

Any idea how long this is going to run for? Considering scooping one up then referring for P2 as I have a feeling the 90/100k offers are not coming back here.

Sea Pea

CSP used to have a 100k bonus?

Chuck

Yeah for a bit I think in 2021.

I am getting back into points travel after a long hiatus after a surgery and then Covid. I got back into the game after listening to one of your podcasts recently. Great with there!!

I have a CSR for around 7 years when it was first introduced and probably cancelled my CSP about 6-7 years ago. I am currently 0/24

I am considering doing a product change in the CSR to a new freedom flex (I have old freedom card still and the unlimited) and then getting this CSP for the bonus as I am not using most of the perks of the CSR. My question is

How long after the CSR product change can I get the CSP? I used to be able to have both before but the bank manger told me that that’s not the case anymoreSince I don’t have the new freedom flex card, can I convert my CSR to freedom flex now and still get another freedom flex in the future to get the bonus? How long do I have to wait for that? #1 is my priority now.

My wife recently went through a similar situation. Downgraded from the CSP to the Freedom Flex. Because it is a change from a Visa to a Mastercar, the CSP remained open for 60 days after the downgrade, so she assumed she wouldn’t be eligible for a new CSP during that 60 day period. She never applied during that period and hasn’t attempted since it was ultimately closed, so I can’t say for certain, but I’m guessing the answer to your question is 60+ days.
