Citi and American Airlines have a boosted welcome offer for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard: 80,000 AA miles after $3,500 in spend. This matches the highest welcome bonus we’ve seen on this card and also comes with a waived annual fee for the first year.
Although the 80,000 miles match the best total we’ve seen, it’s worth noting that AA just ran an in-flight offer that gave you the same 80K miles after only $1,000 in spend. Depending on how much you need the miles, and how challenging the $2,500 difference in spend would be, it could be worth waiting to see if it comes back.

Quick Thoughts
If you’re looking for AAdvantage miles, this is an excellent opportunity, despite the increased $3,500 in spend. For a couple of years, the welcome offer topped out at 75K miles; it’s only recently that we’ve seen 80,000 being bandied about.
That said, if you don’t need the miles immediately or if the $3,500 in minimum spend is a lift, it may be worth waiting to see if the 80K/$1K in-flight offer returns. It just expired a couple of days ago, and we usually see it come around a couple of times per year.
Make sure that you’re eligible before you apply, as you might not be approved if you’ve previously received a welcome offer for this specific card within the past 48 months. If you earned the welcome bonus for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select card or the discontinued Barclays Aviator Red card in the past 48 months, you’ll be fine.
Citi Application Tips
- 48 Month Rule: With most Citi cards, you can only receive a welcome offer every 48 months. This applies to the same exact card, not families of cards, and is counted from the date that you receive the welcome offer, not from when you're approved.
- Velocity Limits: Citi allows a maximum of 1 card every 8 days and a maximum of 2 cards every 65 days (includes both business and personal cards).
- Inquiries: Citi is thought to be more credit inquiry-sensitive than other issuers. We've heard reports that it's difficult to be approved for a new Citi card if you've had more than 6 hard inquiries within the last 6 months. That said, there are plenty of data points of people being approved despite being above that, so it's certainly not a hard-and-fast rule.
- Card Limits: Citi doesn't have a strict limit on the number of cards you can have, but it does place limits on the total credit it will issue across all cards. Unfortunately, unlike most banks, Citi does not allow you to transfer credit from one existing card to another.
- Application Status: Call (866) 606-2787 or visit this page to check your application status. For Costco cards, call (877) 343-4118.
- Reconsideration: If denied, call (800) 695-5171 for personal cards or (866) 541-7657 for business cards.

I got my last Platinum welcome offer in April 2023, so it’s another ~8 months in the wilderness for me…
