There is a new, targeted Amex offer that gives 6,000 Membership Rewards points back on a $300+ purchase of Delta gift cards. The 6,000 MR bonus is worth $66 if cashed out via a Schwab American Express or ~$93 if using our Reasonable Redemption Values.
We found this offer on all of our MR-earning cards, so it appears to be widely-targeted. The fact that this is specifically aimed at gift card purchases makes the offer extremely easy to redeem.
The Deal
- Targeted Amex offer for 6,000 Membership Rewards back on $300+ purchases of Delta gift cards. Enrollment is required and gift cards must be purchased at delta.com/giftcards/amex.
- Purchase must be completed by 11/27/2022
Key Terms
- Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem.
- Only U.S.-issued American Express® Cards that are enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of purchase are eligible.
- Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels.
- Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Your enrollment does not extend to any other Cards that may be linked to the same Membership Rewards program account (such as Additional Cards).
- Offer valid online only at US website delta.com/giftcards/amex for e-gift cards & physical gift cards.
- Valid only on purchases made in US dollars.
- If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the additional points. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant.
- In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the additional Membership Rewards points if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.
- When we calculate the additional points benefit for Amex EveryDay® Card products, points awarded under this offer will not be included.
- Additional points will be credited to your Membership Rewards program account within 90 days after 11/27/2022, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.
Quick Thoughts
Normally Delta Amex Offers are targeted at purchases directly from Delta, leaving many folks to try and figure out ways to apply it to gift cards or a future flight credit in order to capture the savings from the offer. This one is far easier, as it’s targeted specifically at gift card purchases.
The offer is for a $300+ purchase, but it should go without saying that there’s absolutely no reason to buy more than the $300 minimum necessary to trigger the offer. Instead of the normal 20%ish cash back on these offers, the bonus is in Membership Rewards. 6,000 MR is worth $66 if you cash out using a Schwab card, but can be much more valuable than that if transfered to partners, giving this offer a value of somewhere between 22-32% back on a $300 gift card.
Officially, the offer is good until 11/27, but the normal Delta offers have a maximum redemption limit on them and will usually disappear before the expiration date. So, if you’re into this one, I’d advise getting on it sooner than later.
Just fyi – I have Amex business plus credit card. Shows multiple options to transfer points delta, BA, Hilton etc…just tried to transfer 120,000 to delta and have been told it’s no longer an option. The only use is to spend the points on the amex portal!!
Any one else run into this issue ? Any work around ?
Ugh, no love on two Plats and a Gold, SFO.
Checked at 7am this morning, 0 for 14. Either it got scooped up or not widely targeted.
Yup, not targeted on any of my cards
Moi aussi. 0 for 9. Sad.
Data points: available on my Amex EveryDay but not on my Schwab Platinum. I’m in SEA.
i got it on plat/bbp/gold. p2’s gold did not get it (but I didn’t check until I had already added it on my bbp)
Is bbp the best card to use this on? Have biz plat/reg plat, Biz gold/reg gold and bbp. That one gives 2x on everyday spend – I’m assuming since these won’t trigger any bonuses since it’s a gift card not a direct flight purchase?
Yes, that’s correct.
I jumped on this, we fly Delta frequently. I was tempted to do 2x$150 so I could use the gift card to trigger the AmEx Airline credit by partially paying for a ticket. Realized I already used it for 2022 and since I fly with my family of 4 we will likely trigger the full $200 airline credit even with this gift card. Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping I could add this to multiple AmEx cards on my account, but was not able to (some offers I can add to each card).
Even with one $300 gift card, you could do that. If the charge is less than $300, the gift card still has the remaining value.
Yeah, but I want the gift card to be less then the total cost so it triggers the AmEx Platinum airline credit. I don’t want to make more work for myself and create more credits I have to monitor then necessary. If I had 2 Platinum cards I would get 2x$150. Then I would book one airfare that would cost $350 or more so I use the Credit of $150, have a balance of $200 left charge to AmEx platinum and get the credit as statement credit. I would repeat on the second Delta $150 gift card, but since I have only 1 and we are usually well over $500 for our plane tickets I can just use one $300 gift card, pay the balance on my AmEx and get the $200 credit from AmEx.
Could this stack with previous Amex statement credit offers for spending $350 get $100 back?
Wondering the same
Those don’t work anymore as gift cards are not triggering Delta offers that require actual fare purchase.
Tim, I always thought some amex offers had a limit on the number of people who could add an offer, but are you suggesting that offer might disappear from my added offers if enough people redeem this before I use it? I was potentially going to wait until we are close to the expiration date to decide if I want to redeem this offer or not, but if there’s a chance it will disappear from my added offers, I will decide sooner. Thank you.
If you fly Delta with any frequency, I would just redeem it now. You’re floating $300 but the return is almost 30%.
Yes, that’s correct. Some Amex Offers have a maximum amount of activations and will then disappear. Unfortunately, they never give any notice when this is the case.
Sorry, but I don’t know which you are referring to when you say it is correct. To simplify: if I add the offer, do I need to worry about it disappearing from my “added to card” section before the expiration date?
Yes
Yes, they can disappear even after you add it to your card. The Delta ones, specifically, can be tricky for folks. I’ve had them disappear, then reappear and I’ve even heard of them disappearing but still triggering on a purchase.
Sorry, still ambiguous for me. Are you saying it could disappear after you’ve added but before you’ve used it, or only if you haven’t added it?
this is really confusing…so the surest way is to locate the offer in the account then click the link…?
This isn’t about locating the offer (and it is confusing). If you want to use the offer, check your cards first. If you find it in the Amex offers, activate it and go to the link to buy the gift cards.
Everything above only applies if you are targeted but want to wait until October or November to use the offer. Sometimes Amex offers will disappear before the listed expiration date (in this case 11/27), which is what everyone is referring to.
Both can happen, I’ve heard it most often with Delta and Marriott.
anyway to trigger this if it’s not showing up on my cards?
No, unfortunately. You have to be targeted on one of your cards.
I thought there used to be a backdoor sort of link that could check that I recall one which would sometimes show targeted items that weren’t appearing on the card. That said I couldn’t find it.
Used to be, but they appear to all be processed with CashStar now, regardless of whether or not you use the old desktop trick.
Got it on BBP. Already received offer redeemed email from Amex.
Don’t see this either on my personal platinum or on P2’s personal Gold. Wonder what did we do to not get this AMEX love?
Do you live in ATL, SLC, MSP or DTW by chance? I don’t ever get the good DL AMEX offers living near the fortress hub of fortress hubs in ATL.
They don’t ever give us the good stuff. I was 0 for 4 on this — Biz Plat, BBP, P2’s Biz Plat, P2’s BBP Authorized User
Got it in SEA if it helps.
Definitely helpful — another DP for the geography hypothesis. I always see juicy offers for people living around SEA as DL battles Alaska Air to get a foothold there… I suspect BOS residents would also get these as DL tries to build share at Logan?
Another SEA checking in.
interesting. i’m near BOS which is a secondary hub and i got a ton of good delta offers recently across several amex cards
Does BOS have other major carriers flying a lot of routes? If not, I have no clue; if so, it’s like SEA– they are tempting you to be a DL loyalist. They don’t have to tempt we ATL residents as they know we are stuck with them.
I live in Santa Clara (so closest is SJC and SFO). FWIW, I got the delta offers last year (on Amex Gold), but haven’t seen anything this year (since I upgraded Gold to Platinum in Nov last year) . Wonder if that upgrade has any role to play.
Totally agree. They know we have no choice so F us. : (
Be careful with unused DL GCs. I’ve got a bunch of $50 ones from a few years ago. They keep sending me letters saying they’re about to turn them over to the state unless I tell them not to. Have not experienced this with other GCs.
They advertise that they do not expire so why would they do that?
https://milestomemories.com/gift-cards-being-sent-to-unclaimed-property-letter/
Maybe they treated it as lost property or something? Never heard about this before though.
Tried to post a link earlier, must have gotten flagged – https://milestomemories.com/gift-cards-being-sent-to-unclaimed-property-letter/
Isn’t that even better? Can you get it back as cash after it goes to the state?
Yeah, except it happened to me and like many on flyertalk, nothing showed up with state. : ( Lost about $450 in DL g.c. Very unhappy.
I got some notices and never sent in the docs but the gcs never expired
