Delta Amex Offer: Spend $300, earn 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points

There is an interesting, targeted Delta Amex Offer out that seems to only appear on Amex Hilton cards that gives 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points after spending at least $300 with Delta.

This offer is only good for purchases that are made in US dollars AND for flights that originate in the US (although I’m sure enterprising folks can figure out a way to turn this into Delta credit and apply it to a flight that originate elsewhere).

The Deal

• Spend $300 in one or more transactions with Delta & get 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points with a targeted Amex Offer.

• Purchase must be in USD and flights must originate in the US

• Must first add offer to an eligible Card and then use same Card to redeem.

Quick Thoughts

Hilton and Delta have been exploring a deeper partnership over the last year or so, including a decent promotion on Hilton stays and a crappy one on Delta flights. This is the first time that I can remember a Delta Amex Offer being targeted specifically to Hilton cards, though.

We value Hilton points at 0.48 cents each, so you could look at this as being ~$50 off $300 in Delta flights, which would be in the upper-middle of the pack of Delta Amex offers over the last couple of years. That said, the recent addition of Small Luxury Hotels and Resorts (SLH) to Hilton Honors has many of us scouring the cupboards for as many loose Hilton points as we can get, as the value that can be had via those redemptions is often quite a bit better than with Hilton’s own hotels.

Unfortunately, the only Hilton card that has attractive returns on flights is the Hilton Aspire, which earns 7x. If you’re targeted on one, a $300 purchase would net 12,100 Hilton points overall. Outside of that, the Hilton Business card earns 5x and the other two consumer cards are 3x, making the opportunity cost of using them more significant when compared to higher-earning cards.

The offer seems to be fairly targeted. I checked both my wife and my Hilton cards, and we’re 1-5. If you are lucky enough to have this it, there’s one hoop to jump through that could make it slightly irritating: the flights must originate in the US. That said, many folks have been able to effectively apply these to other flights by booking a main cabin flight that complies with the terms and then cancelling it after 24 hours to retain a Delta flight credit.

As always with these Delta offers, if you want it, add it to the card now. It probably won’t last until the expiration date.
