Easy path to Delta elite status through Jan 2024

28

It was already easier than ever to earn Delta elite status this year thanks to Status Accelerators, elite earnings on award tickets, and 25% enhanced credit card spend Status Boosts (see: Shortcuts to Delta Elite Status in 2021).  Status earned this year is good for the rest of this year, all of next year, and through January of 2023.  With the latest Delta announcements, though, it’s even easier to earn elite status next year (earn in 2022 for the 2023 elite year) — if you start now.  And that status will last through January 2024!  Thanks to Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) rolling over from 2021 to 2022, progress you make this year will make it easier to achieve elite status next year.  The key is to have a plan for earning a Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQD) Waiver via $25K spend in 2022.

The elite benefits Greg has found to be most valuable are:
  • Unlimited complimentary upgrades (when available, upgrade from coach to first class on domestic flights). Higher status leads to better chance of upgrades.
  • Waived same-day confirmed fees and waived same-day standby fees (switch to different flight on same day as ticketed flight). Requires Gold or higher. Info about getting value from same day changes can be found here: Leveraging Delta’s Same Day Flight Changes.
  • Complementary Preferred seat selection (choose exit row seats with lots of legroom)
  • Complementary Comfort+ Seats (more leg room, free drinks, better snacks).
  • Regional upgrade certificates. While these rarely confirm before the flight, waitlisting a regional upgrade puts you to the front of the line for upgrading at the gate. This is great to use for flights where upgrades are most important to you. For example, I use these for flights of about 3 hours or longer. This is a choice benefit for Platinum and Diamond status. Upgrade certificates can be applied to both paid and award tickets.
  • Global upgrade certificates. Use these to upgrade from economy to Premium Select, or from Premium Select to business class on any flight when upgrade space is available. When you upgrade from economy to Premium Select, Delta will put you on the business class (Delta One) upgrade list 24 hours before your flight. This is a choice benefit for Diamond status only. Upgrade certificates can be applied to both paid and award tickets.
  • Free award changes and cancellations. This used to be huge, but now all awards originating in North America are free to change or cancel for all members. With Platinum and Diamond status, that benefit extends to flights originating elsewhere. Requires Platinum or higher for free changes on awards originating outside of North America.

Delta elite requirements

a comparison of different colors To reach each elite tier, Delta SkyMiles members must earn the stated number of MQDs shown above. MQDs reset each calendar year. MQDs = "Medallion Qualifying Dollars." Medallion Qualifying Dollars are the sum total of your base-fare spend (e.g. doesn't include taxes) on Delta-marketed flights. Additional Details:
  • Award Tickets: Flights booked with Delta SkyMiles for Delta's own flights earn MQDs. Award tickets earn MQDs at a rate of 1 MQD per 100 SkyMiles redeemed (e.g. 1 cent per SkyMile).
  • Partner Flights: Paid flights booked on Delta partners earn MQDs as long as the member's Delta SkyMiles number is attached to the ticket. MQDs are calculated as a percentage of miles flown rather than the amount paid. Details, by partner, can be found here.
  • Exception Fares: Flights booked as part of vacation packages, cruise packages, consolidator fares, etc. are considered "exception fares".  With these flights, you'll earn miles based on the distance flown. Details can be found here.

2021 enhanced elite earnings

In 2021, Delta is offering the following enhancements to elite earnings:

  • More MQMs through big spend on Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve cards.  Throughout 2021, Delta is offering 25% more MQMs for big spend.
  • 2021 Status accelerators. Between April 1 and December 31 2021, Delta fliers will earn 50% to 75% more towards elite status.  Even better, award flights earn Medallion qualifying miles, segments, and dollars too.  You can read Delta’s announcement here.
    • Main cabin bookings (including basic economy) earn 50% more MQMs, MQDs, and MQSs
    • Premium cabin bookings (Comfort+, First Class, Premium Select, and Delta One) earn 75% more MQMs, MQDs, and MQSs
    • Award tickets earn MQMs, MQDs, and MQSs!  MQMs and MQSs are calculated the same way as paid tickets.  MQDs are calculated as (number of miles redeemed) / 100 and then the 50% or 75% bonus is added on top.

Full details of the enhanced elite earning opportunities in 2021 can be found here: Shortcuts to Delta Elite Status in 2021.

2022 enhanced elite earnings

To-date, we know of two things that will make it easier to earn elite status in 2022:

  1. Award flights will continue to earn MQMs and MQDs through the end of 2022.
  2. All MQMs accumulated through the end of 2021 will roll-over into 2022.  This will be true regardless of whether you earn elite status in 2021 or not.  As a result, in 2022, you’ll have multiple years of MQM earnings to work with.

Credit card welcome bonuses

At the time of this writing, Amex is offering welcome bonuses of 80,000 or 85,000 SkyMiles plus 20,000 MQMs on the Delta Reserve consumer and business card.  If you haven’t had either card before, it’s possible to spply for both in order to get 40,000 MQMs after meeting minimum spend requirements.

Here are current details about the bonuses on each card.  If the MQM bonuses are currently less than 20,000 MQMs per card at the time you read this, I’d recommend waiting to see if Amex and Delta bring back the 20K MQM bonus before applying…

Strategy for earning elite status through Jan 2024

Here’s the strategy I recommend:

  1. Earn MQMs throughout 2021 through flying, credit card bonuses, and credit card spend.  You’ll earn more MQMs this year than usual through Delta flights thanks to Delta’s 2021 Status Accelerators (50% or 75% bonus) and via elite earnings on award tickets.  Plus, you’ll earn more MQMs this year than usual on credit card spend thanks to a 25% boost to Status Boosts.
  2. Roll-over MQMs: MQMs earned in 2021 (and those rolled over from previous years) will rollover again into 2022.
  3. Get a Delta Reserve card now (and meet minimum spend).  If you haven’t had the Delta Reserve consumer card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card in the past 7 years or so, you may be eligible for the current offer
  4. Optionally earn a MQD Waiver in 2021. The hardest part about earning Delta elite status is earning enough MQDs.  That said, you’ll get a waiver up to Platinum elite status (which is very good!) with $25,000 spend in a calendar year on Delta Platinum and/or Delta Reserve credit cards.  Doing this in 2021 will get you to elite status faster, but I marked it optional because you’ll have to do it again in 2022 to keep your status through January 2024.
  5. Look for a similar Delta Reserve offer in 2022.  Delta Reserve and Delta Platinum welcome bonuses often come with bonus MQMs.  If you currently have or previously had a Reserve card, you can still qualify for the bonus on a new Platinum card (and vice versa).  Similarly, if you currently have or previously had a consumer card, you can still qualify for the bonus on a new business card (or vice versa).  The advantage to waiting to apply for a new Delta card in 2022 is that the spend required to get the welcome bonus will also count towards earning a MQD Waiver in 2022.  On the other hand, the advantage to signing up now is that the 20K MQM offer is available now (until 8/25/21).
  6. Earn a MQD Waiver in 2022.  You’ll get a waiver up to Platinum elite status with $25,000 spend in a calendar year on Delta Platinum and/or Delta Reserve credit cards.  Make sure you have one of these cards in early 2022 so that you’ll have plenty of time throughout the year to complete the spend.
  7. Earn one or more Status Boosts in 2022.  Delta Platinum cards earn 10K MQMs with $25K and again at $50K calendar year spend.  Delta Reserve cards earn 15K MQMs with $30K, $60K, $90K, and $120K calendar year spend.  If you spend enough to earn a MQD Waiver in 2022, then you’ll automatically get a Status Boost if the spend was on a Delta Platinum card.  You’ll need $5K more spend on a Reserve card.

Silver Status Example

  • Apply now for the Delta Reserve consumer or business card.  Meet minimum spend requirements in order to earn lots of miles plus 20,000 MQMs.  These MQMs will roll-over to 2022.
  • Earn additional MQMs through flights, including award flights.
  • In 2022, spend $30,000 on your Delta Reserve card (average $2,500 per month).  At $25,000 spend you’ll get your MQD Waiver and at $30,000 spend, you’ll get your Status Boost: 15,000 MQMs.

Even without any flying, the above steps will result in 35,000 MQMs and a MQD Waiver in 2022.  Once you have your MQD Waiver and at least 25,000 MQMs, you’ll get Silver status that is valid through January 2024.

In 2022, any MQMs earned above 25K MQMs will roll over into 2023 (unless you reach Gold status and then it will be the MQMs above 50K that roll-over to 2023, etc.).  In this example, with no flying involved, you’ll roll-over 10K MQMs.  If you then spend $30K on your Delta Reserve card again in 2023, you’ll get another 15K MQMs and a MQD Waiver and therefore requalify for Silver status and keep that status through January 2025!

Gold Status Example

  • Apply now for the Delta Reserve consumer or business card.  Meet minimum spend requirements in order to earn lots of miles plus 20,000 MQMs.
  • Earn additional MQMs through flights, including award flights.
  • Spend a total of $30,000 on the Reserve card in 2021.  At $25,000 spend you’ll get this year’s MQD Waiver and at $30,000 spend, you’ll get your 2021 enhanced Status Boost: 18,750 MQMs.  You will now have at least Silver status with well over the required 25,000 MQMs (you will have more than 38K MQMs thanks to the 20K welcome bonus plus nearly 19K Status boost).  All of these MQMs will roll-over to 2022.
  • In 2022, spend $30,000 on your Delta Reserve card (average $2,500 per month).  At $25,000 spend you’ll get your MQD Waiver and at $30,000 spend, you’ll get your Status Boost: 15,000 MQMs.

Even without any flying, the above steps will result in 53,750 MQMs and a MQD Waiver in 2022.  Once you have your MQD Waiver and at least 50,000 MQMs, you’ll get Gold status that is valid through January 2024.

Platinum Status Example

  • Apply now for both the Delta Reserve consumer and business card.  Meet minimum spend requirements on both cards in order to earn lots of miles plus 40,000 MQMs.
  • Earn additional MQMs through flights, including award flights.
  • Spend a total of $30,000 on each Reserve card in 2021.  At $25,000 spend you’ll get this year’s MQD Waiver and at $30,000 spend, you’ll get your 2021 enhanced Status Boost: 18,750 MQMs (for each card).  You will now have Platinum elite status with over 75,000 MQMs.  All of these MQMs will roll-over to 2022.
  • In 2022, spend $25,000 on one of your Delta Reserve cards in order to earn your MQD Waiver in 2022 for the 2023 elite year.
  • Spend $5K more on the same Delta Reserve card in order to earn a 15K MQM Status Boost with $30K spend in 2022.  All MQMs earned above the 75,000 needed for Platinum status will roll over into 2023 to help you requalify for status in the future.

Even without any flying, the above steps will result in 77,500 MQMs and a MQD Waiver in 2021 and 15,000 more MQMs and a Waiver in 2022.  Once you have your MQD Waiver and at least 75,000 MQMs in 2021, you’ll get Platinum status that is valid through January 2023; and when you earn your MQD Waiver again in 2022, your Platinum status will be valid through January 2024.

Summary

Delta is currently offering several accelerated paths to elite status.  Combine those with Delta’s promise to roll over elite earnings (MQMs) into 2022 and we now have both more time to earn status and a path to keeping that status until the end of January 2024.

The examples I gave above show how to earn Silver, Gold, or Platinum elite status without even flying Delta, and with no elite earnings from the past.  In the real world, earning elite status doesn’t make any sense unless you fly enough to enjoy that status.  So, for most, the path to elite status through January 2024 should be significantly easier than described!

Note that the paths described are not cheap.  The Delta Reserve card costs $550 per year.  For the first year, the welcome bonus more than makes up for that fee, but in later years you may be better off downgrading to a Delta Platinum card (which also offers MQMs for high spend) or cancelling the card altogether (depending upon how much you value the card’s perks such as lounge access, annual companion ticket, etc.).  The other significant cost is the opportunity cost of putting high spend on Delta cards rather than on other cards that earn more valuable rewards.  For example, if you spend $30,000 on the Delta Reserve card instead of a 2% cash back card, you’ll get 30,000 Delta miles, a MQD Waiver, and a MQM Status Boost, but you give up earning 2% of $30,000, which equals $600 in cash.  If you highly value elite status then it’s worth doing.  Otherwise, not so much.

I am a Delta million miler so I receive Silver medallion status every year. I would like to move to platinum status. I fly only about 4 or 5 times a year and either use points or Delta companion certificates. Can you please tell me the best way to use credit card spend to reach Platinum. Since most of my travel is already booked through January of 2023, does it make more sense to start spending now or wait until next year. I do have both a business and regular Delta platinum credit card. Thanks so
much for helping spell out what the best way to do this is!

Darcy

Does the 10k MQM award post automatically? I seem to recall you need to ‘claim’ it somehow. ?
Thx!

Darcy

Thanks!

Rick

@greg Do 2021 MQDs rollover to 2022?

Ryan

@Greg – can you provide any detail on where you’ve heard that MQDs will also roll over to 2022? There’s no mention of it on Delta’s website, and I’ve seen several places say that MQDs will not roll over this year.

khatl

Great article Greg!

So if I have the Delta Plat card and currently at 63k MQMs then, if I understand you correctly, if I spend $25k in the next 5 months, I’d get the 10k MQM award, plus a 2.5k bonus, plus a MQD waiver which puts me into Platinum… AND then all 76K MQM roll over into 2022, and if I put another $25k in spend, I get 10k MQM, and another MQD waiver, which makes me platinum thru to Feb 2024? Is that correct?

Robert Bradley

@khatl – – yes, your calculus is correct.

khatl

Great, thank you!

Joe

hi Greg, great article as usual. I am not sure if anybody has asked this, but does the Delta enhanced elite earnings apply to Delta flights booked from partners like KLM or VA? Because of pandamic, I have a bunch of KLM vouchers and points, and also VA miles, that were from canceled flights and that I need to make use of soon. If Delta flights booked with say KLM vouchers or points apply, then I will definitely take this up and book Delta flights with my Delta skymiles number to receive the points. I would normally do it anyways to get the benefit of Delta gold thanks, which I currently have. Thanks and keep up the great work you and Nick are doing!

khatl

No they don’t. Only DL operated flights get the bonuses

Joe

that’s what i meant, Delta operated flights can be booked from partners like KLM or VA. Since KLM and VA are part of the Skyteam alliance, you can book Delta operated flights using partner funds or miles (e.g. KLM voucher or miles).

Dale R

I’m a DM now (rolled over from 2019 and through 2022 now). I have 58K MQMs now (which would qualify me for Gold on its own in 2022). My question is…if I stopped earning today, will Delta deduct the 50K MQM and roll over 8K MQM next year or will ALL of the 58K MQMs roll over 2022? Thanks!

Robert Bradley

Hello! I enjoyed this article about Delta status strategy. How about a further discussion with something like this set of facts:

2019 – Earned Diamond status; now DM rolled over thru January 2023.

100,000 MQMs that will roll over to 2022.

Flying in 2021 resulted in “earning” Silver status and Silver MQDs; thus less than $6,000 in MQDs.

Our hypothetical Delta flyer already has both an AMEX Delta Reserve and an AMEX Delta Platinum.

What are your recommendations for spending, earning, and pursuit of status in 2021 and 2022?

Thanks! Great post today! I have been thinking about Delta status quite a bit this week!

trudy

Off topic but think you can clarify something for me…I got the citi invite to open an account. I am ready to do this but need clarification on one point. They are talking about some form, two choices of options which I can’t put my fingers on at this moment, that is needed, assume for tax purposes…promo amount I got fairly good sized (700? I think) but I did one of their promos several years ago and didn’t get my payout due to some form they did not have on file…So…what are the forms, does one have an advantage over the other, Thanks for clarifying

Several scenarios
A – to Gold with 1 Reserve card application today
this year – 35k MQM with Amex card sign up and 15k MQM from 30k spend
In 2022 Jan — start 30k spend – at end = 50k MQM and status till Jan 2024
If you can spend 90k next year – PM for sure

B – DM to PM for almost ever – Jan 2026
130k now with all roll overs etc from 2019 onwards DM for now
Jan 2022 – spend 25k on DL Plat card = PM with 65k roll over to 2023
Jan 2023 spend 25k on DL Amex Plat = 75k for 2023 – PM till Jan 2025
Jan 2024 – all flying now in 2021 as well as in 2022 (even award travel ) and 2023 rolls over – 25k spend = enough for PM till Jan 2026

By that time DL may be the only airline left or they may have changed the program
Remember rules and lifetime are until they say so.

When everyone is an elite, no one is an elite …..
So you are not going to get upgrades but perhaps at least economy comfort …until space runs out even there as the upgrade list lengthens

Could you do scenario A with only paying one annual fee? In other words, get the card now, spend 30k this year, spend 30k early next year, and then cancel the card when the annual fee posts in 2022? I’m assuming that all of the MQM would be safe, but do you also get to keep the MQD waiver if you cancel before the end of the year?

Great article, thanks!

Aloha808

I got Platinum status with Delta last year, but hadn’t flown unaccompanied with them until recently (due to a combination of factors: pandemic, etc). Recently I booked a main cabin ticket from ATL to HNL. Then when it came time to fly, I got a same day complimentary upgrade to Delta One. Pretty cool, color me impressed.

Same here. Made it to Gold this year. Took the family to Denver in June. Flew on a 767 surprisingly. Asked Delta about comp upgrade and they said sure and split my wife and I off the reservation from my kids. 72 hours before flight, my wife and I got Delta One. Was NOT expecting that! My wife said, “what are those funny looking seats on the seat map”? I told her lay flats. She said “Whaaaat”?
Sometimes, you work your butt off every day, week, month and year, and something like this just gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling.
