20% off Disney, Amazon, BP, Southwest, and much more…
A few days ago, I showed some of the latest and best Amex Sync Offers including $10 back when you spend $50 or more at Lowe’s (see “20% off Lowe’s, Zappos, Crate & Barrel, and more”). A great option is to go to Lowe’s and buy gift cards $50 at a time. That way, you’ll get 20% off any gift card you can find (via a $10 statement credit from Amex). Yesterday I stopped by my local Lowe’s store to see exactly which gift cards they had in stock, and I found a few gems.
The Amex Sync Offer for Lowe’s is good until May 31 2014 so there’s time to get additional Amex cards before then. Every Amex card you have, including authorized user cards (which are usually free) and Serve cards (but not other prepaid Amex cards) can be enrolled in offers like these. If you do not see the offer in the “Offers for You” section when you log into your account, you can enroll via Twitter instead by syncing your card to Twitter and then tweeting #AmexLowes. Please see “Maximizing Amex Sync offers. Part 1: sync multiple cards” for full details. Keep in mind that you can only get one $10 credit from each Amex card for Lowes purchases.
When buying gift cards at Lowes, have all of your registered Amex cards at the ready and ask to pay $50 at a time. That way, you’ll earn the $10 credit from each card and maximize your savings. Yesterday, as a test, I brought four $50 gift cards to the register and asked to checkout each one separately. I used a different Amex card for each purchase. Moments later, I received four emails from Amex thanking me for using my synced card. If history is any guide, I should see the statement credits appear on my account in a few days.
Two alternatives to using Amex cards are the Chase Freedom and Discover It cards. Both have rotating 5X categories and both are offering 5X at Lowes this quarter. Both limit the bonus to $1500 per spend each quarter. While these cards do not offer as much of a discount as Amex cards, they’re much easier since you do not need to split up the purchase into multiple $50 transactions.
So, now, without further ado, here are all of the gift cards I found…
Disney!
I’ve never noticed this one before. This is a rare opportunity to get up to 20% off any spend at Disney. I don’t see any restrictions against using it to pay for theme park tickets so I expect that would work. It looks like you could even use these to help pay for a Disney Cruise.

Regarding Marriott gift cards: They seem to have disappeared everywhere. A friend found some still in local stores, but they couldn’t be activated at the register. Makes me think that Marriott has pulled them altogether.
.
Regarding alternate user cards: If you have the card setup to view online, you can often sign up for offers right from there just like any other card. If the offers do not show up, or you do not have online access to the AU card, simply sync the card to your any Twitter account (it can be your own account even if the card is not in your name) and tweet #AmexLowes. If you’ve done so before, Twitter may not allow you to do a duplicate tweet so tack on something else like “#Amex Lowes 123”
@Lily – Same here, cannot find Marriott Gift Cards anymore, including at Staples where I used to always by them.
Last time I found x3 Marriott GCs at Staples, the register could not properly activate them either. Maybe Marriott has terminated sales outside its own site?
The Marriott gift cards were available in the store, but it couldn’t register at the check-out.
About Disney Gift Cards. They can also be used to pay for Resort Room only or Package reservations. You can apply 2 Gift Cards towards a Room Only reservation by phone. You can then pay the balance with gift cards in person when you check in.
For packages you can apply as many Gift Cards as you want by phone.
Since I doubt anyone has enough Amex cards to get 20% off an entire Package, you can get Disney Gift cards at Target for 5% off with the Red Card (works on any Gift Card, just not Visa/MC/Amex Prepaids). You can get the Debit Red Card linked to a Checking account with no credit inquirery. However you can do better buying Target Gift cards through resellers and use those to buy Gift Cards in store or online. If you pay any portion of an online order with a Red Card it will ship for free.
Great tips, thanks!

@KookFatKat – Lowe’s register display the message on their check-out machines “No gift card purchase using Lowe’s gift card” :(. So I do not think in-store credit would work.
Can Lowe’s in-store credit be used to purchase GCs?
I don’t think so. In store credit should work the same as a gift card, which can’t be used to buy other gift cards.
Also, my wife has a Serve account. If she does create a Twitter account to enroll her AU card (of my BCP), does she have a create a 2nd Twitter account to enroll her Serve?
The twitter iOS app makes it easy to switch between multiple twitter log ins. You have to sync each card to twitter, tweet, then wait for the confirmation, then unsync and repeat if you use one account.
Set up a new twitter for each card and it goes much faster from there on out. Tweetdeck was awesome for this but it is closed to new users. If you have google email you can add a dot anywhere before the @ for extra email accounts.
An easy way to keep track of which card is linked to which account is to take a photo of the card (cover up the account number first!) and set it as the avatar/icon for the twitter account.
Great suggestion. Thanks.
Ah, I didn’t know the AU had to be enrolled separately. My wife doesn’t have a Twitter account… would she have to create one in order to enroll her AU card? Or can I just add it to my account?
Jigga what? How do you get an authorized user card enrolled?
Are you sure all AU can get the bonus cash back as well? So if my wife is an AU for my BCP and we both spend $50 at Lowes, we’ll get $10 + $10 back? We both made $25 purchases for Small Bus Saturday (different stores) and only got $10 back for one purchase.
Yes, I’ve done this many times. Both cards have to be enrolled separately in the promo
Can you sync a bluebird card (via twitter) with these promotions?… I hadn’t been thinking of using bluebird for these, but of course it is an Amex card.
No
No, Serve is the only prepaid product that works
In the past, I’ve gotten StubHub gcs at Safeway using a 5% cashback card and gas pts, but now I buy the e-versions online at staples.com for 5X plus online portal pts. However, a 20% rebate is much better!
This is all well and good but Lowe’s stores out this way (NorCal) won’t let you buy *any* gift cards with a credit card. This is a very stupid rule that requires cash only.
I tried at the self-checkout once combined with other items and tied up the register for 15 minutes as they couldn’t figure out how to clear it.
That stinks!
@MarkD – I bought some gift cards using Amex CC in Bay Area. Does that help?
which amex cards are OPEN? I just cancelled my platinum. is SPG good?
All Amex Small Business cards are OPEN (that is, they come with OPEN Savings). Yes, the SPG business card is a great option.
@ FM — Can you use Lowes gift cards to buy other gift cards?
No
FM — A little off topic, but did you happen to see any variable load type GC? Need to figure out a way to maximize this quarter’s chase freedom 5% category at Lowes and Restaurants. I will likely get $500 of that $1500 from eating out, if not a bit more, but definitely not the full $1500. And, definitely will pick up restaurant GCs for places we eat at, but just wondering if there was any variables to make sure I maximize the 5%. Thanks.
Unfortunately, no. I listed all of the gift card like things I saw. Home Depot carries variable loads but cash-only for purchasing them.
Your responses to all of the questions below and above set me straight. 1x Per card. S omy plan of buying 40 Disney Gift cards from Lowe’s was a bit premature.
You can buy Disney gift cards on Gift Card Granny up to 7.5% off: http://www.giftcardgranny.com/store/disney-store/
I love you people. God bless you.
Disney Store GCs are not the same as Disney GCs. The store GCs can’t be used in the parks, to buy tickets, etc. They can only be used in the off-site stores (malls, etc.).
Is the AMEX 20% offer good on variable load cards also? (i.e. could you purchase a Southwest gift card @ $500 & get 20% back?)
It’s not 20% off, it’s just $10 statement credit after spending $50. Any purchase above $50 still receives the $10 statement credit.
Any new data points on FM lab RE: Upgrade of physical GC to merchant GC? Appears as only logged upgrade experience was a fail and not that recent
Did anyone know what happened to the Marriott gift card? I can’t find them anywhere. Lowes used to have them.
Thanks for the tip. I’m not sure I’ll bother, though, as I still have a working 5x Citi card (the one you can’t get anymore) that “pays” me back in gift cards! From the experience, I can tell you they’re sometimes annoying to have, unless you have an immediate and specific use for them (like you’re about to buy tickets on Southwest and will pay them with their gift card). You can also often buy gift cards at a discount. 20% is a very good discount, but not a fantastic one.
The wife and I were just discussing getting an annual pass to Disney World. Getting 20% off of all or a portion would be great.
How can we maximize this? Do each card separate, obviously. And can one purchase these online and get the 20%? I could use my SPG each time? Is this a shut down threat? I do not MS at all so I’d hate to risk a shut down over this.
You can only get the credit once per person. So, to maximize this you want to get enough cards in your name to cover the annual pass $50 at a time. So, if an annual pass was $600, then you would need 12 cards to cover one annual pass. Here are some ways to get additional cards:
1. Each of you signup for new Amex cards. There are quite a few options with no annual fee or no fee first year. Plus some have good signup bonuses.
2. In each signup process, add spouse as an authorized user
3. Each of you signup for Amex Serve cards (unless you already have Bluebird cards: you can only have one of each)
4. Ask other family members to add you as authorized users to their Amex accounts.
.
Additional note: No, you cannot buy Disney gift cards online from Lowes (only Lowes gift cards can be bought online and those cannot be used to buy other gift cards)
Anyone have tips for getting add’l discounts at Lowe’s for lawn equipment? I saw the price match plus 10% off standing promo but no one else sells their brands.
Check out the online discount gift card sellers. I used them last year and by the time all was said and done, with the standing 10% off, buying cards when Save a Lot had their deal, etc., got something like 23% off a riding mower at Home Depot. I’m guessing Lowes must have the same discount card availability as Home Depot, but it’s worth checking. (I used raise, gift card granny, etc and went through cash back sites to those sites.)
Yes, Gift Card Granny shows Lowe’s gift cards for up to 8.8% off, plus you can use online shopping portals to earn more points. http://www.giftcardgranny.com/store/lowes/
Bought 20 x 50 Lowe’s cards for my friend who needs a riding mower. I’ll sell to him for 900 bucks and pocket 100 profit. I saw those Amazon cards which looked tempting so I may go back and buy 40 x 50. I’m still trying to spend down the 33% off Amazon deal from December. That’s a lotta diapers.
How did you get more than 4 isn’t that typically the max number of amex cards.
Amex typically allows each person to have no more than 4 Amex credit cards (but that limit does vary a bit from person to person), but there is no limit to the number of charge cards or authorized user cards you can have. Charge cards include the Platinum cards, Premier Rewards Gold card, etc. So, my wife and I each currently have up to 4 credit cards, one or two charge cards, several authorized user cards (for each of my wife’s accounts, I have an authorized user card except when they charge for them, and for each of my accounts she has one). We also have a few Serve cards (one in my name and a couple from relatives).
Ummmm…. do you really have 60 Amex cards?!!
is there a limit of one $10 promo per card?
Yes, one credit per card (per promotion). Sometimes Amex has promos that you can do multiple times per card, but that’s rare and this isn’t one of them.
64. Mrs. Baxterboy12 and I got em for SB Saturday and these sync promos are an added bonus.
20 x $10 statement credits showed up today.
64! That’s awesome.
I’ll be in Charlotte and we can swap some AmEx sync tips.
James
Interesting on the Stubhub. I don’t think I’ve ever seen those at the office/grocery/drug stores or maybe I just never really looked for them. That’s a definite winner considering I’ve never really found a way to get discounts at Stubhub before.
Yep, I think there are great opportunities with that one!
Disney gift cards definitely can be used for ticket media and to pay down a cruise… BTDT!
Great! I have to admit, I had to look up BTDT (been there, done that)…
