A while ago, a reader asked me how it’s possible to have multiple Marriott cards. There are quite a few cards issued by both Amex and Chase, but each has strict offer terms that make the card or the bonus available only if you don’t have cards X or Y, and you didn’t get a bonus on card Z in the past 24 months, and you weren’t born on a Tuesday (I may have made up that last part). The point is that even though there are many different cards, it’s not easy to figure out how to get more than one or two. For full details about all of the Marriott cards currently available, see: Which Marriott Bonvoy card is best?
The main reason someone may want a bunch of Marriott cards is for their annual free night certificates. The cheaper cards (most around $95/year) give you a free night certificate each year good for any hotel that costs up to 35,000 points per night. We call these “35K free night certificates”. The pricier cards ($450/year) give you a free night certificate each year good for any hotel that costs up to 50,000 points per night. We call these “50K free night certificates”. Those pricier cards also offer travel statement credits of up to $300 per year so those cards can cost as little as $150 per year net.
I previously showed that it is easy to get at least $200 value from 35K free night certificates and at least $300 from 50K free night certificates. In other words, if we think of each card’s annual fee (less travel credits) being the price to buy these certificates, holding onto Marriott cards is sort of like prepaying for heavily discounted Marriott nights. Those who stay often at Marriott hotels and can make good use of these certificates would do well to get as many Marriott cards as they can.
My goal for this post is to figure out how someone could start from zero and obtain as many Marriott cards with free night certificates as possible. Many of us have multiple Marriott cards today because we obtained them before all the crazy rules were put into place. That’s great for us, but not helpful for those looking to start signing up for cards now. This post is specifically for those starting with no Marriott cards at all.
This post is not meant to be advice. I simply wanted to figure out whether it’s possible to start new and get all of the cards that are now available which offer free night certificates. Think of this as a puzzle. Whether the solution I present below makes any sense for anyone to actually do is not something I considered in developing it.
What is possible?
Marriott cards that offer 35K free night certificates
There are three different cards that offer annual 35K certificates for those starting new. A fourth card, Chase’s Bonvoy Premier Plus Business, is no longer available new and there’s no way to get it if you don’t already have a Chase Marriott business card.
- Bonvoy from Amex ($95): This card is not available new, but you can product change from the Bonvoy Brilliant Amex.
- Bonvoy Boundless from Chase ($95): Available new
- Bonvoy Business from Amex ($125): Available new
Marriott cards that offer 50K free night certificates
There are two different cards that offer annual 50K certificates:
- Bonvoy Brilliant from Amex ($450): Available new
- Ritz-Carlton from Chase ($450): This card is not available new, but you can product change from any consumer Chase Marriott card such as the Bonvoy Boundless or fee-free Bonvoy Bold.
Can you get more than one of the same card?
Chase’s terms explicitly state that you cannot sign up for one of their Marriott cards if you already have a Chase Marriott card. With Amex, though, the restriction is specifically with the welcome bonus. You cannot get a welcome bonus for a card you already have (or have had in the past). So, with Amex, it may be possible to sign up for a second card of the same type as long as you don’t mind that you won’t get a bonus. This is especially likely to be true for the Bonvoy Business card. Note, though, that Amex won’t approve new credit card applications if you already have 4 or 5 Amex credit cards.
With either bank, it may be possible (I haven’t tested it) to get two of the same by product changing to a different card, signing up for the card that you want two of, and then changing the first one back to the desired card. For simplicity’s sake, for the rest this post I’m going to assume that you cannot get two of the same card at the same time. My goal is to figure out how to get all 5 different cards.
Can you play two player mode?
When two people travel together often, it’s always possible to double the number of acquired cards by having each traveler sign up separately for the same cards. For the rest of this post we’ll assume that we’re only looking at expanding cards for one person since you can apply the same solution to two people to get twice as many cards.
A plan
If you don’t worry about welcome bonuses, Amex Marriott cards are easy to get. Amex lists many restrictions against getting the welcome bonus if you already have other Marriott cards, but they don’t stop you from getting their cards without a bonus.
Chase, though, has two types of restrictions. Like Amex, they have restrictions that prohibit getting a welcome bonus if you have certain other Amex Marriott cards or if you’ve received a bonus on certain other Amex Marriott cards in the past 24 months. But Chase also has eligibility criteria to qualify for Marriott cards at all. For example, you can’t get the Chase Bonvoy Boundless card (with or without a welcome bonus) if you currently have one of the following Chase Marriott cards or if you’ve received a welcome bonus for any of these cards in the last 24 months:
- Marriott Bonvoy Premier
- Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
- Marriott Bonvoy Bold
All 5 Cards in 15 Months
Given the Marriott card signup restrictions, I believe you could get all 5 Marriott cards that offer free night certificates by doing so in this order:
- Sign up for the fee-free Bonvoy Bold from Chase. Do NOT meet the bonus spend requirements. If you receive a bonus, you won’t be eligible for another Chase Marriott card for 24 months.
- Wait 12 months and then call to upgrade the Bonvoy Bold to the Ritz card. The 12 month wait is necessary because Chase won’t allow an upgrade any sooner than that. Upgrading is necessary before the next step because Chase won’t let you sign up for another Chase Marriott card if you currently have one. Luckily the Ritz card isn’t included in that restriction.
- Sign up for the Bonvoy Boundless card from Chase. This time it is fine to earn the welcome bonus.
- Sign up for the Bonvoy Brilliant card from American Express. You won’t qualify for the welcome bonus, but you should be able to get the card.
- Wait a week and then sign up for the Bonvoy Business card from American Express. You won’t qualify for the welcome bonus, but you should be able to get the card.
- Call to downgrade the Bonvoy Brilliant card to the Bonvoy Amex card.
- Wait 91 days from the day you signed up for the Bonvoy Business card. Now, sign up, again, for the Bonvoy Brilliant card from American Express. You won’t qualify for the welcome bonus, but you should be able to get the card.
The above process will take over 15 months to complete, mostly due to the requirement of converting the first Chase Marriott card to the Ritz card before signing up for the next Chase Marriott card. It may be possible to do some of the Amex signups before signing up for the second Chase card, but I’m not sure that Chase will approve a new Marriott card if you already have an Amex Marriott card and you certainly won’t get the welcome bonus.
4 Cards Quickly
If you’re OK with getting only one Chase Marriott card and three Amex Marriott cards, then the following should be possible:
- Sign up for the Bonvoy Boundless card from Chase. Meet the spend requirements and earn the welcome bonus before moving on to step 2.

I want to stay at a Marriott in January 2026. What should I do credit card wise from now until then to get max value? Thinking for st Regis in bora bora
Don’t current hold any Marriott cards, but I am at 6/24. Business cards are fine.
Hi Greg – with all the changes is this still a valid option? Is there a way to get subs too? I have had some of the cards but P2 hasn’t.
Great article Greg!!! Do you recommend have two Ritz card for P1 and P2 or having a Ritz card for P1 and having Amex Brilliant for P2? Thanks Greg!!!
Marriott strategy, I currently hold Chase Boundless (24 mo up in Nov) would like to PC to Ritz. I also would like to hold Amex Business, will apply in Nov and receive SUB. Will this prevent me from getting Amex Brilliant SUB later? Should I grab Brilliant SUB before I PC to Ritz? Thank you.
No Marriott cards currently.
What if I (1) signed up for the Bonvoy Bold but did NOT hit sign up bonus, (2) waited at least 91 days and then applied for both the Amex Bonvoy Brilliant and Amex Bonvoy Biz, and did go for both sign up bonuses, and (3) after 1 year tried to product change my Bonvoy Bold to Ritz?
Would I be able to get both Amex bonuses and still do the Ritz product change? Ritz is my higher priority so I don’t want to mess up my ability to get it, but it would be great to also get both Amex SUBs too.
Thanks for any help!
That’s very creative! I think that would work. Alternatively I think you can get the Amex cards first and then sign up for the Bold. You wouldn’t be eligible for the Bold bonus but my reading of the terms suggests that you might be able to get approved without the bonus.
Thank you for such a quick response! And that’s very helpful.
Greg, great article. I have a question, I don’t have any Marriott card right now, but I want to get 2 cards (Chase Bonvoy Bold + Amex Marriott Bonvoy Biz) to collect 30 elite nights quick. What would be the best sequence to secure these two cards in a short period of time? I don’t mind not getting welcome bonus.
If your heart is set on those two cards in particular, then first get whichever one has the better signup bonus. The second one won’t earn a bonus unless you wait 2 years after getting the first bonus.
Another option is to get both the Amex Biz and Amex Brilliant. You CAN get both of those signup bonuses. If you don’t want the high fee of the Brilliant, then when the 2nd year annual fee posts, downgrade to the $95 Bonvoy Amex
If I currently have the Brilliant, are there any restrictions preventing me from upgrading my Boundless to the Ritz-Carlton?
No, no restrictions
Thank you Greg for this awesome article, I just got approved for amex bonvoy brilliant today, when do you think the soonest i can downgrade to amex bonvoy?
I don’t know. Chase would make you wait a full year, but I don’t know if Amex has similar restrictions.
Thanks Greg! I called Amex to confirm, they want a full year too.
I currently have the Amex Bonvoy (SPG) card and want to go for the “4-cards quickly” run you describe above. But I also want to qualify for the current Chase 100k points offer on the Boundless card. To do this, my understanding is I’d need to cancel my Amex Bonvoy card, wait 30 days, then apply for the Chase Boundless card as described in step 1 above. Did I get that right? And will I have any issues getting approved for the Amex cards in steps 2-4 if I recently cancelled the Amex Bonvoy SPG card? Thanks!
Yes, that sounds correct to me. I don’t know if you’ll have any trouble signing up for the Amex cards. One potential issue is that Amex has been enforcing a rule where they won’t approve a credit card if you already have 4 Amex credit cards open. So, if you have more than 1 Amex credit card (not charge card), you’ll have trouble with this plan
Cool! No, only have two Amex cards. Well, I’ll give it a try and report if Amex won’t let me reapply for the card I just cancelled. Thanks!
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve completed 3/4 of the 4-card play and am stopping here very happily. I cancelled my Amex Bonvoy card, applied for the Chase Boundless card with spend to qualify for the welcome bonus, then applied for the Brilliant card, waited a week, applied for the Amex Bonvoy Biz Card, and just called to downgrade the Brilliant card to the Bonvoy card. So I now have 3 Bonvoy cards with total fees of $315 that will yield three 35k night certificates at around the same time each year, which is great and totally worth the cost for me! Thanks for your help 🙂
Glad to hear it! Thanks for reporting back your results.
So after getting approved for the Brilliant, how long did you have to wait to downgrade and did you get the subs for 3 cards as well?
Hi Nick – Can’t remember how long I waited to downgrade the Brilliant card. Maybe a couple weeks after getting approved for the Amex Bonvoy Biz card. Not sure what the last part of your question means?
Thanks for the reply, my last question was, did you get the sign-up bonus (sub) for all three cards?
Ahh. No, you can only get the sign-up bonus on the first Chase card.
Based on this article, it appears that I am eligible for Chase Bold/Boundless even though I current hold (and will keep) AMEX Bonvoy (old SPG); I just won’t be eligible for the bonus. Is this correct?
As I understand it, Chase don’t (usually?) approve credit cards if one can’t get the signup bonus. Is this correct for Chase Bold/Boundless as well?
I’m not sure whether or not Chase will approve you when you’re not eligible for the bonus. My guess is that they won’t approve you despite the terms suggesting that it is only the bonus that you are not eligible for.
I have the AMEX Business card older than 24 months and want the Chase Boundless card to double the 15 night credits. It seems from the article that I’m not eligible for the bonus because of holding the business card. My interpretation was different though. I thought I could still get the bonus on Boundless because of the word “and” in the conditions. I am not eligible if I hold the AMEX Business card AND received the bonus on that card in the last 24 months. It seems that both conditions would have to be true. Is that a misinterpretation on my part?
I think you’re right. You should be able to get the bonus for the Boundless card
Will Amex let you downgrade in the first year?
I think so, but I’m not sure.
I won’t want to do this, but this is the kind of out of box theoretical exercise that drew me to this blog years ago. Kudos for being a thought leader in this space and being one of my favorite daily reads for over 2,000 days.
A couple of thoughts:
1) I thought these limits were primarily there to prevent sign-up bonus abuse. If the strategy were to avoid some sign-up bonus voluntarily, it may not run afoul of the original intent of such limits
2) On the opposite direction of the above, assuming the limit were instituted by Marriott for some reason, having 4-5 free night rewards flowing into the same account may trigger a red flag. Hope Marriott won’t pull an AA in such a scenario and claim that such behavior violates some sort of agreement.
Certainly not proof it could never happen… but my account has been fine getting four 35k and two 50k every year with no issues.
Same here. I don’t think getting extra certs will raise any flags.
Greg — Related questions. I have heard you and Nick talking about going up and down on the Chase Ritz to the Bold or Boundless. I am thinking about downgrading Ritz at next annual fee in order to get the Brilliant sign up bonus 30 plus days later. I might want Ritz again later. 1. Do you guys have any data points of bouncing Ritz down and then back up successfully? 2. What is best timing to downgrade Ritz? I assume to get the annual fee refunded I have to cancel within 30 days and forfeit the 50k cert and probably shouldn’t use the $300 credit. Will I at least get 35k cert if I go down to the boundless card or do I risk getting neither 50k or 35k cert? If instead I pay fee, wait a few months, use $300 credit, wait for 50k cert, and then downgrade do I get any AF pro ration? Thanks. Marriott cards are so complicated.
Good questions. Unfortunately I don’t have any answers for you. I haven’t downgraded my Ritz card nor have I received any concrete datapoints from people who have. I’d be nervous about doing so since I don’t know that they’ll continue to make the card available for upgrades indefinitely.
Sorry Greg, but I know this video will help your loyal followers and not leave you, watch Mark Reese video on youtube, he had Ritz before then downgraded it Boundless and upgraded it again to Ritz.
