As I was making an Amtrak reservation last night, I stumbled on an increased offer for the Amtrak Guest Rewards World Mastercard that includes the usual 20K points after minimum spend but also sweetens the deal with a $100 statement credit after meeting the same spending requirement. Amtrak is a niche program, but for those who value the points this increases the value of the offer nicely (though we have in the past seen it as high as 40K + statement credit).

Quick Thoughts

Until about two years ago, I’m not sure I’d ever been on an Amtrak train despite the romanticized image in my mind of what train travel is like. I love the idea of train travel, it just doesn’t frequently meet my needs. Still, I’ve taken the train a few times in these past couple of years and really enjoyed it.

Amtrak points are decently valuable, yielding up to 2.9c each toward fares, so this welcome bonus is quite valuable compared to the minimum spend required. The addition of the statement credit more than offsets the $79 annual fee for the first year, which is a nice bonus.

Keep in mind that we have occasionally seen an offer for 40K on this card, so if you don’t need the points for a near-term use you may want to wait and see if that offer returns.

Amtrak points can be interesting even for those not interested in train travel, though it’ll require you do get spendy on your Amtrak card. See: Loyalty alchemy. Turn Amtrak coal into United gold, and more….

I’ve been meaning to get this carf. Missed the 40k offer last fall. Is there a pattern of that offer coming around annually? The card was never on my radar so not sure what the cadence is for the increased offer. Thanks if you know.
