There is yet another new Amex Offer out today, this time for Staples.com. I found this offer on cards that earn Membership Rewards points: “Get 2x Membership Rewards points on purchases at Staples.com” — though in really it’s an extra 1x (which does mean 2x on most cards — but it’s worth noting that if your purchase ordinarily qualifies for some other bonus, this offer only adds 1x more). This offer should stack with the Current Amex Offer for 10% back on up to $1K in purchases if your business cards were previously targeted for that offer (See: New 10% Amex Offers: Staples, Lowe’s, Exxon Mobil & Dell (Business Cards Only).
The Deal
- Earn an extra 1x Membership Rewards points at Staples.com with a new targeted Amex Offer (for a total of at least 2x depending on the reward structure of your card)
Key Terms
- Expires 12/31/18
- Not valid in-store — only valid at Staples.com
- Excludes Staples branded e-gift cards, Quill, Smilemaker, Staples Business Advantage, Staples 4 Government, Staples Toner Services, Staples Technology Solutions, Staples Promotional Products, Staples Print Solutions, Copy and Printing Services, Staples Contract and Commercial, Staples App Center, Staples Industrial, Staples Book Rental, Staples Simplexity, Staples Share Fund, Coastwide Labs, Catalog and Staples Fundraising
Quick Thoughts
This adds to a number of retailers offering an extra 1x Membership Rewards points through the end of the year, though it’s a bit surprising to see Staples added to the mix given the offer for 10% back at Staples that many found to be targeted on their business cards. Still, nobody will complain about the potential to earn more rewards and save a few bucks.
Keep in mind that this 2x offer is only valid at Staples.com, not in-store, so you’ll have to be purchasing online to stack the offers (the 10% back offer is valid both in-store and online). Also note that while the offer states “2x”, it’s really an extra 1x. For example, if you made a $5,000 purchase on a Business Platinum card, you would only earn 2.5x total on this order (1.5x for purchases of $5K or more on that card plus an extra 1x from this promo). The same thing goes for those with an Everyday Preferred card — if you make 30 or more purchases in a billing cycle, you’ll only earn an extra 1x with this offer (and the 50% bonus will not apply to it).
All that said, an extra point is an extra point. This offer looks the most attractive if you are stacking it with another offer – otherwise, there are cards that earn a better category bonus at office supply stores like Staples.

So, with the Blue Business card, I’m earning 3x and getting the 10% back – correct?
Staples has traditionally prevented > $2k in VGC sales. Is there any reason to think a 5k order would go through on anything? Are you thinking about adding in furniture, or was that just a hypothetical?
Definitely not a huge VGC order. It was just meant as hypothetical to say that you won’t get 3x (this doesn’t double the 1.5x – it adds 1x).
