Office Depot is running another Visa gift card deal that wasn’t in their latest weekly ad. You can get a $10 instant discount when spending $300 or more of Visa gift cards, making this not-quite-profitable, but potentially worth it if you have a 5x/5% card.

If you have a choice between Staples and Office Depot in your area, you’ll do better buying Visa gift cards at Staples seeing as they’re fee-free this week. If taking advantage of this Office Depot deal, you’d have to pay $3.90 in net activation fees if buying two $200 Visa gift cards. An added benefit of the Staples deal is that paying with a credit card linked to Dosh will earn you an additional 3% back, with a limit of $5 each day.
Not everyone has a Staples store conveniently close though, so this Office Depot could still be a good option if you have a 5x/5% card for office supply stores. If you do, you’ll earn 2,020 Ultimate Rewards when buying two $200 cards, more than offsetting the $3.90 activation fees after the $10 instant discount is taken into account.

Can you buy a $500 visa card have only one activation fee and receive $10?
Unfortunately Office Depot no longer sells $500 cards – the max is now $200.
Exactly backwards advice I’d be giving people, depending on what they’re using the GC’s for.

Sure. At OD/OM, you can buy 2x$200 of the Everywhere brand Visa GC’s. The fee on those is lower, $4.95 vs $6.95 for the regular Visa. Therefore they are free-free just like the Staples one, but you’re spending twice as much in one visit. The caveat is that these GC’s work at certain retailers only.
