Plastiq, the bill payment service that lets you pay bills via credit card, has introduced a new promotion:
Get a 1.5% rate for all one-time, immediate MasterCard payments to any business. This promotion will expire on November 30, 2015 at 5 p.m. PT.
According to Plastiq: “People can pay any bill or invoice to receive this rate – from rent, utilities to even babysitters.” Please note though that “any bill or invoice” isn’t quite right. You can’t pay credit card bills or friends, nor can you contribute to any investment accounts. More details about what you can and can’t pay can be found here: Complete guide to Plastiq credit card payments.
The no fee debit option no longer applies to prepaid cards…
Remember how debit card payments through Plastiq are now fee free? Well, Plastiq has stopped allowing prepaid debit cards as part of that deal. If your regular bank debit card doesn’t automatically show no-fee, you’ll have to email Plastiq support to get the fee waived.
More complaints…
I keep getting more and more complaints from readers who have tried Plastiq, but end up regretting it. Most complaints I hear go something like this:
I tried to pay XYZ and the payment seemed to go through…
Plastiq later contacted me and wanted more information, which I gave them…
[various details about back and forth issues with Plastiq support]
The bill was finally paid, but X weeks late. Now I owe a late fee!
So… if you plan to use Plastiq, make sure to pay bills many weeks earlier than the due date.

I’ve used plastiq to meet minimum on my credit cards. I used them for my mortgage payment once and for 2 car payments. All were sent and credited on time. Took on average about 10-11 days from pressing the submit button to showing up on my accounts.
I have been using them for my mortgage with the 1.5% rate. Have not had a single issue for 3 months. I’m happy with them.
I have used them several times for recurring and one-time payments. The rare time I’ve had issues, they have been resolved pretty quickly. I think it’s a great service.
I tried sending $100 check to a guy bought stuff from. It appeared to go through. The next day I got an email that I need to provide invoices. PITA.
Their customer service support is awful. I got an email supposedly from the CEO asking my opinion, so I gave it to them. They wrote back and gave me a “dedicated” representative who did refund some fees and promised to straighten out my account. After several email exchanges (because they don’t speak on the phone) he resolved nothing and basically told me I was confused. Awesome service recovery – not!
Used the service once to pay my home owners insurance. First it took them 2 or 3 days to mail the check, then 2 weeks later I find out the insurance company never got the check. Plastiq blamed it on having the wrong address except I went to the insurance company’s website, copied and pasted their mailing address into the address section on the Plastiq form.
I do not trust them.
