We recently posted about an awesome promotion to make $500 Plastiq payments fee-free using a Mastercard linked to Masterpass (See: Get Fee-Free Plastiq Payments When Using Masterpass). Stephen predicted that the promotion was a bit too generous to continue unchanged for 4.5 months, and it turns out he wasn’t wrong: over the weekend, Shawn at Miles to Memories reported an email from Plastiq stating that on June 1st, the cap on fee-free payments will be $250. However, there is still time to schedule $500 payments fee-free. Update: This offer expired, but you can still make fee-free payments of up to $250 each.
The Deal
- Pay up to $500 in bills and invoices using your Mastercard on Masterpass and pay no Plastiq fee before June 1st — after June 1st, the cap will be $250 in bills and invoices
Key Terms
- Expires September 30, 2018.
Can only be used up to the first $500 on each transaction— starting June 1st, the first $250 of each transaction will be fee-free- Customer needs to have made $500 in payments in their account history to qualify.
- They need to use a MasterCard that they added to their MasterPass Wallet.
Quick Thoughts
Five hundred dollar payments would normally cost $12.50, so you stand to save that fee (and earn free rewards) with the promotion in its current form. Beginning on June 1st, that savings will be cut in half as the fee-free promotion will only apply to $250 in payments.
Thankfully, the text of the email reported at Miles to Memories states that already-scheduled payments will be honored under the current ($500 fee-free) promotion, so you should qualify under the current terms if you schedule your payment before June 1st. Note that editing your payments after June 1st will remove the promotional fee-free rate.

[…] no specified end date for this deal and Plastiq has changed the terms of a deal in the past (although that was an overly generous offer), so it’d be best to take advantage of this ASAP […]
I tried yesterday (29th) and they tried to charge the fee. It is same card and payee I got fee free earlier in the promo
On my account, it looks like they charge the fee for any payment that would be processed after 9/30/2018. They deliver payments electronically to one of my payees in 2 business days, and the latest it would let me schedule a payment to that payee without a fee was 10/3. Another payee only accepts payments by mailed check, and the latest it would let me schedule a payment with that payee without a fee was 10/8. In both cases, my card would be charged on 9/30 to deliver on time. Any electronic payments I tried scheduling after 10/3 or check payments after 10/8 were assessed the standard fee.
Hey nick
Last monty I registered my IHG MasterCard with Masterpass, and went about paying $250 + 6.25 fee payments. Several to my mortgage company sunbank.
But how and where should I see the 6.25 credits appear?
Thanks
[…] The usual fee is 2.5%, but they often run promotions with reduced rates for Mastercard payments (such as the Mastercard/Masterpass promo that ends 9/30/2018). It’s also possible to reduce the rate by earning Fee Free Dollars through friend […]

Anybody know if you can make multiple Plastiq Masterpass MC payments of $250 each to the same recipient in the same day (i.e. mortgage payments)? The site seems to allow it (zero fee shows up if I authorize a second payment to the same recipient), but I wonder if it will be blocked later.
What is a MasterCard?
[…] Bank of America has increased the offer on the Business Advantage Cash Rewards Mastercard — you can now get $350 cash back after making $3,000 in net purchases in the first 90 days (versus the previous offer of $200 back after $500 in purchases in sixty days). While the new offer requires a lot more spend, the extra $150 back on an additional $2500 in spend over the standard offer gives you an extra 6% back on that spend on top of your normal earnings, which makes this a reasonable offer. Keep in mind that those will bills to pay via Plastiq can take advantage of the current Masterpass promotion that allows for fee-free payments of up to $250 at a time. […]
I am having a hard time to register a MasterPass account since I am not a Capital One customer. Is there another way around to register without having a Capital One card?
It doesn’t have anything to do with which issuer you’re using — MasterPass should be open to anyone. It’s just a payment processing app (like PayPal, Visa Checkout, Apple Pay, etc).
