Rakuten is running a special promotion for its birthday with up to 15% cash back (or better yet 15x Membership Rewards points) at many stores. Some stores have increased rates that aren’t quite so high. For example, Business Platinum cardholders will be glad to see Dell at 10x / 10% given the increased credit being offered for Dell purchases. There are plenty of other good rates as well.

Quick Thoughts

Always use a tool like Cashbackmonitor.com to compare rates and be sure you’re getting a good deal. That said, keep in mind that Membership Rewards points may be more significantly more than 1c each to you, so consider the right value for you when comparing.

If you’re not yet earning Membership Rewards points through Rakuten, keep in mind that it’s easy to change your earning preferences. Also, if you’re new to Rakuten, Stephen posted yesterday about the promotion to earn $30 / 3,000 Membership Rewards points for making a single purchase of $30 or more through the Rakuten portal, so see that post before you sign up.

As late as March at Staples, I was getting the 2% from Rakuten and 3% from Rakuten Visa which was a pretty good deal. I was really excited to get the 15%, but they cut that one really fast and now say they give NO cashback on gift cards at Staples. Even the Rakuten Visa only paid 1x. I am just wondering if it was Staples that put the squash on this. I also did an Office Depot order but OD just transferred me direct to GiftCardMall. Rakuten balked at paying 15% even though I started at Rakuten. I imagine when the 15% started, a ton of people hit the Staples deal. I have asked Rakuten when they changed their policy. This really blows. One more good deal down the drain.

They sure cut the Staples 15% fast.
