Refund a non-refundable booking, save money on “free” days, a Platinum hack and more

In this week’s Frequent Miler week in review around the web, find a nice little hack to save a few bucks on your next free rental day, a little-known loophole to get your money back on a non-refundable booking, a new path to Platinum, and more. Read on for this week’s recap

Why You Need To Keep Checking Prices On A Free Car Rental

I love Autoslash. Any time I need to rent a car, they save me money over what I would have paid elsewhere — they are now my first stop for all paid rentals. When reserving free days, on the other hand, I never expected they could save me money. But free isn’t always free, so this nice little hack from Joe at Your Mileage May Vary may help you save a few bucks on your next “free” day rental as well.

Hilton Will Refund Non-Refundable Bookings — With A Catch

One Mile at a Time reports on a trick I never knew existed. This strategy could totally be worthwhile, especially if it works the way some readers suspect in the comments. I rarely ever book an advance purchase rate because the flexibility is often much more vlauable to me than the small cost savings — but this might make a major change in my strategy moving forward.

Final thoughts on the Morgan Stanley Amex Platinum/Access Investing end-around

Several months bag, I included the first in a series of posts from Windbag Miles about a possible workaround to get the Morgan Stanley Platinum even without a Morgan Stanley investment account (which Greg has previously shown was a no-go for him). The results are surprising — this is definitely worth a read if another Platinum card has been on your radar.

[Correction] Citi Prestige (will) won’t be Discontinued this Fall

It looks like changes are coming to the Prestige card, and Doctor of Credit has the inside scoop. Assuming the card gets temporarily pulled in the coming days as he suggests, it might be tempting to apply for it while it’s still available. However, with no current signup bonus and Citi’s 24-month clock on earning a ThankYou bonus on another card, it would make more sense to look for a product change opportunity, which should still be available while the card is off the market.

Can You Visit The Same Priority Pass Restaurant Twice On The Same Day?

priority pass

I rarely include two posts from one blog in the week in review around the web, but this is a question I’ve wondered about many times before. I’ve only made it to one Priority Pass restaurant so far, but as the locations keep expanding, I’m bound to end up on a long layover at a location with one sooner or later. Thanks to Travis at One Mile at a Time, we know the answer and proper strategy.

Hard Rock Atlantic City: Rock Royalty Trip Review

Hard Rock Atlantic City Status Match

At the moment, I’m at FTU in Washington, DC. Since I don’t have a current copy of my M Life Platinum card, I’m considering taking a hop over to the MGM National Harbor at some point this weekend to get a new card made for the sole purpose of status matches in Atlantic City. The reason for matching is all of the sweet opportunities right now for free night stays with matched status. This post from Miles Talk reviews the in-hotel experience on one of those options — a match to Hard Rock Royalty that can get you a few free nights at the new Hard Rock casino. If you’re considering a trip to Atlantic City for a few free nights, you’ll want to check out what to expect.

That’s it for this week around the web. Check back soon for this week’s last chance deals.
