To temper your excitement from the outset, this probably will not earn 5x as Office Max / Office Depot’s online gift cards are processed by GiftCardMall. Still, it’s a pretty easy win: Office Max / Office Depot is offering an instant savings of $10 when you buy a $100 Visa Gift Card online. It seems there is no activation fee.

Quick Thoughts
Again, you’re probably not going to get office supply rewards on the purchase, so you’re better off using a card that earns the best return on everyday spend. I also don’t believe you can scale this, so it’s just a ten dollar win — but a win is a win and this is an easy win. Of note, there was no activation fee — my order came to a grand total of $90 for a $100 card. I doubt this will last more than a few hours, forget about the expiration date of August 26th.

[…] bottom line of this deal isn’t as good as their similar deal online (now expired) because you’re not charged an activation fee for the online […]
Managed to purchase one just now. Seems like availability comes and goes.
FYI, for some reason the promo is working again. I was finally able to buy a card for my spouse, using a different credit card and email address. Didn’t even have to go Incognito!
Tried it two times via cellphone on Thursday – order two times declined. Yesterday I tried once again via notebook – worked out to my surprise!
Just tried (again) using your link to the offer. The promo appears to be dead, since the link takes you to the GCM page selling VGCs for face value + $5.95 activation fee.
Yes, promo is dead 1 day into a 7 day offer period. Kudos, OD, for another well-run promotion! /s
I see some are getting their orders declined. I don’t know why. FYI for those waiting to see what happens, my order went through and I got an email saying my payment method was successfully processed about 2 hours after placing the order.
I had same result. AMEX sent me an email warning me of a possible fraud charge within seconds. I said it was ok and resent request and got order confirmation and 3 hrs later email saying payment processed successfully.
My two orders were declined, P1 and P2, different emails and phone numbers were used.
I was able to get 2 through. tries 3-5 the order declined even with different email addresses, credit card and phone numbers. oops meant to comment under capt greg, can someone delete this comment?
I just did it 5 times, and they all seemed to go through. After doing a few tests, I figured out that you have to put in a new email and credit card each time to purchase another. FWIW, after the first time, I always purchased in incognito mode on chrome.
Tried it again, this time in Chrome incognito and declined again.
That’s so strange. I wonder why it kept working for me.
Oops meant to post under Capt Greg’s comment.
I was able to get 2 through. tries 3-5 the order declined even with different email addresses, credit card and phone numbers. Also, incognito, vpn, different devices. sigh.
Yea, I guess this is just YMMV. I think I could’ve kept going too, but I stopped at 5 because I generally don’t like dealing with gift cards, MOs, etc. But this just seemed like too good of an offer to at least get a $50 profit, plus some points.
Ok so hours later my first two were declined. I tried #6, under a new billing address and it was declined. I’m giving up for today!
5x with Prestige?
Yes, I expect that would work. I dumped my Prestige, so I’m not positive, but I think it would probably work
Good deal! Thanks
My order was declined and they don’t give a reason
Same here. Tried 4 times. All resulted in a message saying:
We apologize, but your order #xxxxxx has been declined. You will not be charged for this purchase and the preauthorization fee will be removed from your bank statement within 3-7 days.
We understand this is frustrating, but in order to provide our customers with the highest level of security, we cannot share any further information.
If you would still like to place an order, we encourage you to review your shipping and billing information for accuracy.
Not sure what happened. No cancellation email here yet.
They’re interesting, for sure. Same thing used to happen to me occasionally on GCM.com. Tried different browsers, different cards, different ip addresses, incognito mode, the whole arsenal … Order goes through; then within 10 minutes, cancellation email comes: “Attention: There is a problem with your Office Depot order”
Tried twice. Same thing
Have you estimated the value of loss based on money sitting in gift cards that could be earning interest? There’s a companion game of finding high interest savings accounts that require debit card usage earning decent rates.
I rarely leave money sitting in gift cards for long, but even when I do not even the highest high interest account earns more than $10 on a $90 investment even over the course of a year, no less the course of a click.
I entered 1 and it’s coming to $200 and not working
Maybe try deleting what’s in your cart? I just went to the link in the post and had no trouble adding 1 to my cart for a total of $90.
Do you have to log in to checkout? I don’t have an account
I clicked where it says “check out as a guest”.
I had the same issue – had to turn off my ad blocker (Ghostery) to make the checkout page work properly
Switched browsers and it let me checkout finally. Thanks
