A new Amex Offer is out for Amazon today that Stephen posted over at GC Galore and it’s a good one: get an extra 5x at Amazon.com up to 2,000 points ($400 in purchases). While stuck at home I’ve certainly been ordering from Amazon, so I’d be happy to add this one. Unfortunately, I keep getting an error when trying to add it. I’d recommend signing in and trying sooner rather than later as this one is likely to fill up and disappear.
The Deal
- Get an additional 5x Membership Rewards points at Amazon.com (up to 2,000 bonus points) with a new (targeted?) Amex Offer
Key Terms
- Expires 7/22/20
- Valid at Amazon.com and via the US Amazon mobile app
- Not valid for Amazon Go, Amazon Local, Amazon Mechanical Turk, Amazon Web Services, Amazon Home & Business Services, Amazon Currency Converter, Home Services, Prime Photos, Amazon Inspire, Amazon Video Direct, Amazon business, Amazon Global, or Amazon Drive
Quick Thoughts
Again, though this may be targeted, I found it on all of our cards that earn Membership Rewards points. I recommend adding this ASAP as offers sometimes fill up their quota and get pulled early. Amazon offers are always popular but will be especially so given the current environment.
When I tried to add the offer, I initially got an error and then I keep seeing a message saying they are sorry but Amex Offers aren’t available right now.
However, I logged in on a difference device and I was able to add the offer successfully.
I doubt that many people will struggle for a use on this one until the end date, but keep in mind that Amazon usually doesn’t charge for items until they ship. Given the current slow shipping speeds, you’ll want to order well in advance of the deadline to use the order if the current situation persists. Of course, you could probably just buy an Amazon gift card to trigger the order and lock in the additional 5x (for a total of 6x or more depending on the rewards structure of your card) on $400 in purchases.
I definitely recommend checking for this one and added it sooner rather than later.
We have added this to and updated our database of current Amex offers.

It looks like I am not getting the bonus on Amazon Market place orders. I didn’t think that was a restriction. Anybody know for sure?
You’re right that it is explicitly mentioned in the terms, though it does state that your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. Many of Amazon’s own promos (like use 1 Membership Rewards point and get 40% off or get a coupon for a future purchase) only work with items shipped and sold by Amazon. You’re right that it isn’t clear here…though I think Amex may hide behind the statement about how points may not purchase if the merchant doesn’t code it correctly.
I can confirm that I bought something from Amazon directly and did get the 2K bonus points, so I know something shipped and sold by Amazon did work.
I’ve confirmed that I am earning the 5x bonus for Marketplace orders.
UPDATE: I just chatted with Amex. I am getting the 5x points on all purchases. If you look at the breakdown for membership reward points earned since the promotion began, you’ll see 2x points beside the transaction. Within a day or so, you’ll see where they add 5x points for that transactions.

When it says “excludes corporate gift cards and custom-designed cards” are you sure that reloading an Amazon balance will trigger the bonus?
As sure as I can be. I think they’re referring to companies that order thousands in GCs to give as employee incentives.
Already had $300/1500 mr pts on two cards. Added $400/2000 to two cards. Thisis very timely since my amazon balance was going down and I did not want to go to OD/OM to get $500 gc’s to get 5x.
My husband and I both got it on our Everyday cards and Personal Gold cards. I did not get it on my Green card.
I plan to do next week’s grocery shop at Whole Foods. I was going to add an Amazon gc to my order and use my Freedom for 5x. I don’t want to add a stop at Staples. Now I can leave all of my Freedom $1500 5x for groceries.
Thanks for the alert, Nick & Stephen!
Wouldn’t it be 7X with BBP card 5X on top of 2X?
Had the offer on our MR cards – but added offer to BBP cards. With CS Platinum its $35 CB on $400 or 2,800 MR with BBP 2X per $1.
Yes, that’s why I said “For a total of 6x or more”. It would be 6x on a card that earns 1x, 6.5x if you’re using the EDP and have 30 transactions in a month, 7x with the BBP, etc. Different amounts depending on what you’re using.
I got this earlier this year and was scared when I thought I’d burned it up on a lowly $40 purchase. Turns out the terms say it’s good on purchase through July and points will post within a few weeks after July, so I may not be missing out on second and subsequent purchases as I’d feared.
It was targeted, 1,500 cap on wife’s Platinum. I was not targeted on my Gold or Everyday.
WILL BUYING A “AMAZON” GIFT CARD WORK SO THAI CAN JUST ADD IT TO MY AMAZON BALANCE
@Bill. From previous experiences, reloading Amazon card gift balance works in getting the additional MR bonus.
We got 1500 offer on each of two Personal Golds. And it ends 7/31 instead of 7/22. So there is variance. In my experience, sometimes if you use one of these offers, they send you another down the line.
It is targeted. My husband got it, but not me.
Just checked, did not get targeted with my AMEX Gold card…..
