Capital One Shopping adds even more gift card redemption options

190
Update 10/17/25: Over the past couple of days, we have seen the return of some popular redemption options (including REI, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Hotels.com, Nordstrom Rack, and more) and an expansion to include many more brands (options I have noticed recently include Marriott (which I wrote about separately), Macy’s, lululemon, Holland America, Tractor Supply). One reader even reports the return of Walmart in their account. In total, I see 94 gift card redemption options at the moment, which is a notable increase over what we were recently seeing. If you’ve been sitting on Capital One Shopping Rewards, it is worth a look to see what new options have been added for you.

Update 8/8/25: It looks like there are a bunch of gift card redemptions back online, the most notable being eBay. If you have a stash of Capital One Shopping Rewards to redeem, it would be worth taking a look at what’s on offer ASAP.

~~~
Update 5/28/25: Capital One Shopping has again removed a ton of useful gift card redemption options…over 30 in total. I (Tim) am now seeing only 42 possible redemptions in my account, and many useful ones are gone, including Lowe’s, Home Depot, eBay, Instacart, CVS, Ace Hardware, and Hotels.com. Unlike last month, this appears to be affecting most, if not all, Capital One Shopping customers. If anyone still has access, we’d love to hear from you.
~~~ Original Post Follows ~~~

Capital One Shopping is a public shopping portal (no Capital One credit card required) that offers rewards dollars that can only be redeemed for gift cards to select merchants. Over time, they have offered some broadly useful merchants like Walmart, Kroger, Safeway/Albertsons/Vons/etc, DoorDash, GrubHub, and Uber Eats, among others. Sadly, none of the merchants in that sentence are available anymore (each having been removed at different times, some returning for a time and disappearing again). While I have long been willing to mostly look past the limitation of only being able to redeem rewards for gift cards, it’s been really frustrating to see high turnover in the redemption options over time.

Quick Thoughts

A reader reached out today to say that they thought that eBay gift cards had been removed as a redemption option. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be correct (I still see eBay among the gift card redemption options), but it was nonetheless a good reminder to publish a post about which options have been removed and which remain.

For many, redemption options like Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart made the utility of the rewards earned through Capital One Shopping almost as good as cash. Portal rewards are never quite the same as cash, given the delay in payouts, and if you’re using gift cards at Kroger or Safeway, you’re missing out on earning a bonus category for that spend. Still, given the monster payouts frequently offered by Capital One Shopping, it has been easy enough to overlook the limitation of gift cards.

However, given the loss of popular redemption options noted in the first paragraph, some readers might think twice about whether they want to collect portal rewards through Capital One Shopping, given the uncertainty of redemption options.

Personally, I’m still happy to use Capital One Shopping. Just yesterday, I got offers like 35.5% back at Get Your Guide, up to 36% back at Expedia (usually good for tours and activities), 40% back at Klook, 15% back at Vrbo, 25% back at Agoda, 15.5% back at IHG, and many more. The payouts tend to be enough higher than what I see elsewhere that I’m confident I will get enough value out of the rewards even with a more limited set of redemption partners. However, that won’t necessarily work out for everyone.

Out of the redemption options available at the time of writing, I would say that the most broadly useful and/or relevant to travel are:

  • ebay
  • Lowe’s
  • Home Depot
  • Instacart
  • Hotels.com
  • Celebrity Cruises

Personally, I’m still happy to redeem for Hotels.com, and I’ll surely have occasional uses with other merchants. For instance, I buy stuff from L.L. Bean from time to time and don’t otherwise see their gift cards discounted. I’ll buy a holiday gift from Bass Pro Shops now and then, etc. Still, you’ll want to more closely track the redemption options if you don’t find the gift card options as useful.

Walmart and Home Depot disappeared after the their system maintenance on10/21/2025

Have Best Buy and Verizon now

Just don’t get a HomeChef gift card. I assumed I could use it like cash, so I could get a meal kit delivery with normal promos, and use the gift card to pay for the order. But no, HomeChef doesn’t let you use gift cards and promos in the same order, so I had to pay full price for the order so that I could use the gift card. Waste of money.

bc111

Yeah I’ve used a lot of those food delivery services in the past but would usually pay with an Amex Offer and a Rakuten cashback, so it never occurred to me that a gift card would wipe away the savings from normal promo codes. Oh well, you live and learn!

Tim

I got Walmart and just redeemed – processed and available immediately

Anonymous Traveller

Saw Walmart this morning and redeemed as well.

brian

What! Man I’ve been looking for Walmart… i have $800+ in rewards waiting. The family Christmas is paid for as soon as I get my hands on the Walmart gift card.

Adam mm

I hope they bring eBay back… that’s most useful one for me.

RH2

It’s periodically available for me. Comes and goes. I find Walmart and Kroger most useful but did use Staples in order to participate in the luggage promotion. Sure, not the absolute best redemption considering alternative payment options but still good.

Jimmy

I got back several that are useful to me including REI, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

I’ve got almost $1,000 in Capital One Shopping rewards which are effectively worthless because the current gift card selection is abysmal. I’m stopping cold using Capital One Shopping until they add back some acceptable merchants.

Frank T

Thanks for the heads-up! None of those you mention were there this a.m. when I checked, and now I see they all are. We’ll see for how long…

Christina

Just today Walmart is back in my portal as a redemption option!

Max

Seems like they’re cycling it a lot more now. Used to always have at least 1 pet store option and usually a home improvement store option. Now have neither, but eBay is currently showing for me, so I redeemed $200 there.

Have $90 left and getting another $500+ soon, hoping to see a pet store pop back up.

There’s also a bunch of lame gift basket options now which is about as crummy an option as I’ve seen.

ann

Ebay was not a giftcard option for me. but after browsing ebay I got an email offer to redeem my rewards for an ebay gc to use on something I was looking at. So I took the offer & made a purchase.

Ray

DoorDash showed up for a day or 2 before vanishing. Had a few redemptions for it. They cycle in GCs but the popular/usable ones go fast, sometimes in 1 day. It’s not convenient to have to wait for the ones you want to possibly show up. Last time DoorDash showed up was probably a year ago.

Lee

They track all of our browsing history and purchases, then eliminate the gift card options of those you’d most likely use. I was going to redeem for stubhub, went to Capital one website and option was there, then went to stubhub to see how much tickets were, came back to Capital One to redeem gift card-GONE. The option for that gift card suddenly vanished. I don’t think this was an unlucky coincidence of the vendor dropping out in those 3 mins.

I’m deleting this portal. As should everyone else.

Danielle

Nothing but lame gift cards left.

Pretty miffed about it since I intended to use my rewards for specific purchases.
