Quick Thoughts
In case you’re not familiar with Cinemark Movie Club, it’s a movie theater subscription service. You get one 2D ticket per month which rolls over if unused, 20% off concessions and waived online fees for additional tickets. For someone who regular watches movies at a Cinemark location, it seems like a pretty good program even before taking into account these additional offers.
However, the purpose of this post is more to highlight that those offers aren’t as generous as they first appear, although they could still be worth taking advantage of for anyone seeking low-hanging fruit in their quest for elite status with American Airlines.
The reason the offers can seem a little misleading is because at first glance they look like they have the potential to generate some decent savings and earnings. The price of Cinemark Movie Club seems to vary slightly depending on where you live, but the monthly cost in many locations appears to be $9.99 per month or $109.89 for an annual subscription.
Buying an annual subscription and getting 50% back from the Citi Offer and 23x AAdvantage Miles and Loyalty Points would therefore be an excellent return. Your net cost would be $54.95 and you’d earn 2,527 American Airlines AAdvantage miles and 2,527 Loyalty Points, on top of the 12 movie tickets you’d receive over the course of the year and savings on concessions. I was therefore all set to take advantage of these offers for both me and my wife.
The deals sadly aren’t that good though. The Citi Offer states that it’s valid on a purchase of $8.99 or more and the SimplyMiles offer says you’ll earn 23x on a purchase of $8.99 or more. Unfortunately the “or more” part of the deal descriptions counts for very little. That’s because the small print restricts your overall savings and earnings. The Citi Offer is capped at a $5 statement credit and the SimplyMiles offer is capped at 230 miles, i.e. $10 (well, $9.99) spend for both offers. Neither offer is therefore valid on an annual subscription which is where the greatest value would’ve been. Well, they are valid on an annual subscription – you just won’t get rewarded accordingly for that higher spend.
Having said that, it might still be worth taking advantage of this offer for some people. If you subscribe for a month your cost is $9.99, but you get $5 back from the Citi Offer and $5 back after clicking through from a shopping portal like TopCashback, thereby making that first month free. In return you get a free Cinemark movie ticket as well as 230 AAdvantage miles and 230 Loyalty Points courtesy of SimplyMiles. That’s not a hugely generous return, but if you’re slowly inching your way towards elite status with American Airlines now that it’s earned via Loyalty Points, every little bit helps – especially seeing as this is a deal that can be done from the comfort of your couch and which (effectively) doesn’t cost you anything.
Apparently the last time simplymiles offered this, they had no limit. Hope it comes back. Successful data point in this thread: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/33809228-post36.html
