Kroger released a new digital coupon today which gives a discount of $5.95 when buying a couple of variable load Visa gift cards.

Kroger VGC Variable Load 07.22.20

The Deal

Key Terms

  • Expires July 28, 2020.
  • Excludes Visa $25, $50, $100, and Multipack cards.
  • Limit one coupon per customer.

Quick Thoughts

Seeing as variable load Visa gift cards have a $5.95 activation fee, this is effectively a BOGO deal. That means you’ll only have to pay $5.95 in activation fees when buying up to $1,000 worth of VGCs.

While that’s higher than the $3.95 fee on $1,000 cards from Simon Mall, the benefit of this offer is that you can pay with a card that earns more at grocery stores. It’d be worth avoiding paying with a Hilton card through the end of July though seeing as Amex has been clawing back points from some cardholders for purchases such as these.

Getting them to sell you a MO with one of these close to impossible. Its a Pain in the you know what, sometimes I have to goto 3 stores before I can get one, not gonna do it anymore until maybe next year when I can get 4x points with my Amex Gold again.

Data point: Kroger fuel points no longer awarded for the purchase of MC/Visa gift cards. At least that was my experience. Would love to hear someone say they have had a different result.
