My favorite Dell purchases

29

If you have the Business Platinum Card® from American Express, then we share a problem… or, an opportunity.  Every six months we can buy stuff from Dell and get up to $200 back.  That’s a great opportunity when there’s stuff you want, and its a bit of a stressful nuisance when the six months are nearly up and we can’t think of a single thing to buy that we really want.  Since I manage multiple Business Platinum cards in my family, I have a lot of recent experience in buying random things from Dell.  Some I’ve liked and some, not so much.  In this post I’ve listed my favorites.  Hopefully this will help give you some ideas.  In exchange, please list your favorites in the comments for everyone else to share.

Anker Magnetic Battery

a black electronic device with a green label

I love this little battery.  It has a little kickstand so that it can hold my phone upright or sideways and it works as a wireless charger.  I have one of these at home for parking my phone at night and another one that travels in my go-everywhere backpack.  When out and about, I can use the battery to top off my phone’s charge simply by snapping it onto the back of my phone with its magnets.  And, every night in hotels, I plug it in and use it as my phone charger and my phone instantly becomes my bedside alarm clock.

This is a great choice for anyone with a phone that works with a magnetic wireless charger (with iPhones, I believe all models from 12 and up offer this).  Just make sure that you have a MagSafe phone case.

Anker USB-C Charger

This little charger is only a little bit bigger than a standard iPhone charger, but it is powerful enough to charge my laptop (make sure your laptop can be charged with a charger offering 40W or less) and another device (such as the Anker batter, above) at the same time.  It is perfect for travel since it’s amazingly small and light.

Google Nest Protect

After spending too many 3ams wandering around my house trying to figure out which smoke detector was beeping every couple of minutes due to a low battery, I finally ripped out all of those old detectors and outfitted my house with these instead.  Now, all of the detectors are wirelessly connected, and notifications go to my phone regardless of whether or not I’m home (e.g. “smoke detected in kitchen”).

Ring Video Doorbell

We now have one of these on each exterior door to our house.  In addition to serving as a doorbell, they give us some peace of mind knowing that they’ll record anyone moving around close to our house.

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

I love not having to carry a key around.  These smart locks are easy to install and can be controlled completely from your smartphone.

When travelling, I like to take all of my streaming services with me.  Devices like these make that easy.

XBox Gift Cards

I buy these when they’re available even though I don’t have an Xbox.  These gift cards can be used to buy anything on the Microsoft Store.  And while the Microsoft Store has a smaller collection of items for sale than Dell, this approach has a couple of huge advantages: 1) Xbox gift cards don’t expire (unlike the Dell $200 credits which expire every 6 months); and 2) you can combine up to $1,000 worth of gift cards to use on a single order.  I bought my Microsoft laptop this way.

Some favorites that are no longer available through Dell (or not currently in stock):

  • Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
  • World Power AC Travel Adapter: At first I didn’t like that this isn’t an all-in-one international adapter, but rather individual adapters that all snap together.  In actual practice, though, I like that the individual adapters are small and lightweight so that I can connect one to my Anker charger and just leave it connected for the entire trip.  Plus, they’re not heavy enough to fall out of wall plugs (which used to happen to me all the time with an all-in-one adapter).

Do a search on Smart Home (Dell website) and you will find all sorts of products – Google, Amazon Echo + more, Roku, Phillips Hue, so many things wouldn’t have thought of. Lots of gift giving ideas.

For Greg and those managing multiple Plat Biz cards, if a purchase is over $200, can you pay with multiple Amex Plat Biz cards so that you get the most credits from all the cards?

hmm, I have only been able to figure out how to use 2 at a time, unless it’s changed in the past 6 months? Wish I did know this, as I had at one point 7 of these in two player mode!

Dan

I recently bought a net gear wifi extender from Dell because of their $50 off Amex credit. The extender works perfect.

Hoping the Bose tv soundbar will still be available after Jan 1. I’ve gotten new wireless keyboard + mouse, monitor, noise canceling earbuds, Fitbit, ink cartridges.

I purchased Bose QuietComfort Earbuds and also took advantage of the Dell offer on the Business Platinum Card. I absolutely love them for use on flights…best noise cancelling!

Todd

I bought Bose Frames Tempo Sunglasses with my Dell Platinum Credit – and I absolutely love them. I can take calls with complete clarity, listen to podcasts and music – and hike and bike effortlessly without worrying about ear pods or headphones – and the sunglasses are awesome.

I’ve purchased a second computer monitor for my work from home set up and a google nest for the house!

Sue

The digital frames. I will say every time you walk by it, you’ll have to stop and look at all the pictures of all the places you’ve been scrolling by. :).

What about best things on Gopuff! It’s been a good run, in last 2 months unless it’s extended…

Got a battery charger, lightning cable… eggs are always good even if they do expire in 3 days. Starbucks ground coffee… kids vitamins… can’t decide on a favorite
