Quick Thoughts
Even though Delta SkyMiles often get a bad rap for being a lesser-value award currency than competing airlines, these offers can nonetheless represent an excellent return on spend. Even if you only get 1c per Sky Mile, these offers are potentially worth many hundreds of dollars (even a thousand or more on the Reserve cards). If you’re able to find one of the better uses of SkyMiles, all the better.
Also keep in mind that the Platinum and Reserve cards are popular for their annual companion certificates. We recently published a video showing how to use Delta companion certificates and also how to figure out where there will be availability to use them even if you don’t have have a certificate. Do keep in mind though that you won’t actually receive a companion certificate until after your first anniversary.
On the flip side, with the big offers we’ve seen lately on cards that earn American Express Membership Rewards points, one has to compare cards and decide whether it would make more sense to earn a comparable or greater number of Membership Rewards points (which could transfer 1:1 to Delta) or have the additional Delta benefits afforded by one of these cards.
If you had already done the math on that and were considering applying for one of these, the new offers could easily tip the balance.
It’s also worth noting that if you’re lukewarm on earning more Delta SkyMiles but you still want one of these cards for its benefits, you might want to try going through the motions toward booking a flight on Delta’s website while logged in to your Delta account. Aaron in our Frequent Miler Insiders Facebook group reported seeing an offer today for up to $500 in statement credits and 50K miles on the Delta Gold card while looking at a booking.
Whether you more highly value a statement credit offer like that or the mileage offers above is a matter of personal preference. I’d generally gamble on miles being worth more to me in the right scenario, though in the case of the Delta Gold card, that booking offer looks pretty good to me.
I wish you would “show your work” on the value of cards. For the reserve biz, I’d think 110k would be $1200-1300, minus the af = $600 or so – minus the differential in spend as against a 3% card, I get maybe $240 in cost. I guess that’s what you list as value – I would add something to account for the delta vacay credit and Uber and resy.
Yeah, 50k miles and $500 statement credit is potentially interesting, though the spend requirement is obscured. If it is lower, then that’s a great deal.
Remember the family rules. Start at the bottom and work your way up.
I currently have 3 Delta cards (the Reserve, Reserve Business, and Platinum Business), mainly for the $2,500 MQDs they each offer. I would like to add the Platinum for another $2,500 MQD but would hate to lose out on the welcome bonus because of the other cards I already have.
The terms state “You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or previous versions of these Cards.”
Since it says “may not” versus “will not”, is there a scenario where I could still receive the welcome bonus despite currently having the other Delta cards?
Worst case scenario is you’d get a popup when applying saying you aren’t welcome for the sign up bonus, and there’s no hard pull risk. So nothing to really lose by going for it.
