Quick Thoughts
This seems interesting assuming that most stations are participating – I haven’t yet tested it to see if stations near me are participating. I did download the app and add a Plenti number and payment method. If these purchases still code correctly as US gas station purposes, it would make sense to stack this with a card that earns one of the Best Category Bonuses at gas stations.
I’ll be curious to see how smoothly this works as you need to pull up the app and use it to pay at the pump.
I imagine the way to know if your station is participating is when the app finds your station. Then, you can choose your pump number or scan a QR code on the pump.
The app will even let you pay for add-ons like a car wash, and then you’ll have to be sure to authorize the pump before lifting the handle. It looks easy — we’ll see if it’s this easy in real life.
For those interested in the fine print, here were key terms:
Since I’m on a road trip at the moment and will need to fill up a few times, I was excited to see this promotion. I used my latest 10 cents off from T-Mobile Tuesdays at Shell the other day. I’m not sure if there is a way to use grocery store fuel rewards with this, but if you don’t have any such rewards to use, this is a way to score a discount if it works well.

I used the app like normal but now I see a message on the pump that says “lower handle for discount”. Don’t know how to do that. I managed to get gas but I have no idea how I did it. This is the second time this has happened. Not sure why I have to do something to get the discount instead of just applying it. Wish I knew what handle I lowered to get it working. Anyone seen this?
I think that just means to activate the pump.
Does the payment process through Apple Pay on iPhones? I downloaded and don’t see a way to add cards, so it seems like it uses Apple Pay. Hopefully I will still get the gas category bonus from my CC.
@Frank I guess you fancy yourself a virtuous crusader for the environment, one that also likes to travel around the world while telling others what bad people they are for driving SUVs?

I’ve been using this app since I got the Altitude because it is a 3x mobile wallet payment. The other benefits are that it minimizes time outside the car in the winter (I authorize by pump number before I get out of the car, you don’t have to interact with the payment machine at all) and very easy Plenti integration.
eBay is selling Exxon gift cards at 6% discount. I’m guessing you cannot use gift cards as eligible payment for the $0.10 off deal. With fuel at almost any realistic price, you are probably better off with the discount gift card. If comparing apples to apples, the best category spend option at eBay is Chase Freedom beginning April 1, with 5% back using Paypal. Though if your road trip has already begun, you probably don’t want to wait around for delivery of gift cards.
No doubt that gas station gift cards are a good deal if you can keep track of multiple gift cards and remaining balances. Personally, I don’t usually end up buying gas gift cards because I know I’m not good at consistently carrying them in my wallet and keeping track of how much is left on which one.
My last couple of fill-ups were around $2.40/$2.50 per gallon. Ten cents off on $2.50 is about 4%. If it stacks with a category bonus and I don’t have to keep track of the Exxon gift card, I’m reasonably happy with that.
But you’re definitely right that the gift card route yields a better discount.
I drive for a living so am I always buying gas gift cards. They live in my glovebox with a Sharpie to put the residual balance on it after a fillup. It’s really not that hard.
FYI eBay pulled all their discounted cards in the early morning hours. I predict the more discounts will be coming for end Q2 since sales will be down for awhile because all the crazy coupons and discounts are ended. Discount pre-sales, rebates, and couponing to below-cost levels are all addictive downward corporate spirals only benefiting execs looking to kick the can down the road to the next quarter.
I would not buy Exxon gas for 300% discount.
