Some Fidelity Rewards Visa cardholders are reporting a targeted offer for extra points on purchases from November 1 to December 31st after meeting a minimum purchase threshold. The offer seems to vary and whether it’s worth it will depend on which version of the offer you get.

The Deal

  • Some Fidelity Rewards Visa cardholders are receiving targeted spending offers via email. Reported offers include:
    • Earn 2 additional points per dollar (up to 2,000 points) for every dollar you spend after you make $200 in purchases
    • Earn 5 total points per dollar (up to 2,000 bonus points) after making $900 in total purchases
    • Earn 5 total points per dollar (up to 2,000 bonus points) after making $650 in purchases
    • Earn 5 total points per dollar (up to 2,000 bonus points) after making $1,350 in purchases

Quick Thoughts

The offer for 2 additional points per dollar up to 2,000 points basically means an extra $20 on $1,000 in purchases — again, after meeting the initial spending threshold (in this case $200). So after $1200 in total purchases, I believe you’d have earned $44 cash back (2% on the initial $200 and then 2% + 2% bonus on the next $1,000).

The offers for 5 points appear to really be 3 additional points per dollar up to 2,000 bonus points — so the bonus in that case would be on up to $666.67 in purchases. Again, this means a bonus of $20 in extra cash back on those purchases after meeting the spending threshold. The offers listed above get progressively less valuable, but they are still worth considering. For example, the one that requires $1350 in purchases (which is obviously the worst of the bunch) still works out pretty well if I’m understanding the bonus correctly as you’d get:

  • 2% back on $1350 in purchases ($27)
  • 5% back on the next $666.67 in purchases ($33.33)
  • That’s a total of $60.33 back on $2,016.67 in purchases
  • $60.33 / $2,016.67 = 2.99% cash back

Obviously nearly 3% back is a fairly good return on unbonused spend, so this offer could be worth it if you have the card and have purchases to make where you wouldn’t do better than 3% back ordinarily (and keep in mind that the offers requiring less initial spend are a better deal yet). The biggest pain point here may be in keeping track of the total purchases once you’ve done the math to figure out how much you have to spend to max it out.

There may be other versions of the offer as well. If you’ve got the Fidelity card, it’s worth keeping an eye on your inbox.

[…] Targeted Fidelity spending offers (extra 2x) (Expires 12/31/20) […]

Is it extra two points on any amount spent over the $900? And what’s the basic amount of the return before this bonus?

This is what I got: Earn 5 total points per dollar (up to 2,000 bonus points) after making $2300 (!) in total purchases

The offer I got was worse than the ones described in the blog post. Basically, earn five points per dollar up to 2,000 points, but only after spending $2,900 (during the months of November and December). By my calculations, to maximize this I will have to spend a total or $3,300 on the card, for an average return of 2.36%. Normally I would do this, but with so many current opportunities to earn 5x Chase UR, and a couple of other bonuses I am chasing, I don’t think I can do this Fidelity promotion.
