If you have a Marriott credit card issued by Amex, check your Amex Offers as there’s a targeted offer giving +5 points per dollar at U.S. gas stations. That means you’ll earn 7x-9x depending on which type of card you get the offer on.

Marriott Gas Amex Offer +5

The Deal

  • Earn +5 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar at U.S. gas stations with a targeted Amex Offer.

Key Terms

  • Expires December 31, 2023.
  • Limit 5,000 bonus points.
  • Offer valid for eligible purchases at gas station locations in the U.S. An “eligible purchase” means a purchase made with your enrolled Card at a U.S. gas station location by 12/31/2023.
  • Offer excludes online purchases and marina fuel or any type of commercial fuel, including jet fuel purchases.
  • “Gas station” means a merchant that is primarily in the business of selling gasoline to consumers.
  • A gas station may sell other convenience items, but its primary business must be selling gasoline to consumers.
  • The following are NOT considered gas stations: superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline.
  • Not valid for corporate card transactions.
  • Valid only on purchases made in US dollars.

Quick Thoughts

I got this offer on my Marriott Bonvoy Amex card (which was converted from the old SPG card) which means non-Marriott spend earns 2 points per dollar. The +5 therefore makes it a 7x card which is a decent return seeing as Marriott points aren’t as easy to rack up as points from many other hotel programs. Note that this is only valid on $1,000 of spend though due to the limit of 5,000 bonus points.

If you’re targeted for this offer on a Marriott Business Amex card, that’d be even better. That’s because the business card ordinarily earns 4x at U.S. gas stations, so this offer would make that 9x – an even more generous return than the 8x earned as standard on the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card, although that would also depend on how you value Marriott and Wyndham points.

While many people won’t need to spend $1,000 on gas by the end of the year, bear in mind that many gas station chains sell gift cards in-store. It’d be worth doing a test purchase first to ensure it codes as a gas purchase, but that could be an easy way to lock in the bonus points from this offer.

$5 for $25 spend at Exxon and one time only. Weak !

I must have gotten lucky. My offer was +7 for my Bonvoy Brilliant. That’s 10 pts per dollar for the first $714 of spend.

Jim Lovejoy

Oops! Normally only 2 pts/$ so 9 pts per $.
More DP My wife also got the 7 pts bonus on the Brilliant card.

Even though superstore gas stations have their own MCC that codes as gas station, Amex excludes them. For many, such an offer is completely empty.

How does one tell if it codes as a gas station?
Thanks.

Andrew

Yep disappointing that Kroger stations around me don’t earn gas category bonuses with AMEX but do with Chase and others.
