Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?
Update: Spirit has announced that this program will end on Sunday, April 23rd at 11:59 Pacific. Last call for those who are interested.
Spirit Airlines has launched a new, paid status match program in partnership with statusmatch.com. It applies to elite members of 32 loyalty programs (16 airlines and 16 hotels) and allows participants to begin enjoying elite perks immediately upon being matched. There is a fee of $49 or $99 depending on which status you’re matching to, but the matched status is then valid for 12 months and there’s no need to complete a challenge to maintain it over that time period.
The Deal
- Spirit Airlines has launched a new status match program that matches status from 32 loyalty programs
- Once awarded, matched elite status is valid for 12 months.
- Status can be matched to either Spirit Airlines’ Silver or Gold, depending on your current status in the loyalty program that you are matching to Spirit.
- The fee for matching is $49 for Silver status or $99 for Gold status.
- You must be a Free Spirit Loyalty Program member to participate in the matching program.
Spirit Elite Tier Benefits
Free Spirit Silver status is definitely the lesser of the two options available, with Gold being a significant step up. Gold status is actually fairly compelling if you fly the airline often and offers a free checked bag, a free carry-on bag, a free drink and snack onboard, exit row seat assignment at booking, pet fee waiver and more. Here’s a complete list of benefits for each status level:

Quick Thoughts
Full disclosure…it’s been years since I’ve flown Spirit. It’s just not a great option out of Seattle. However, I know many folks who love it and consider it the best of the low, low cost carriers. Greg and Nick got to fly the Big Front Seat, the crème de la crème of the Spirit Experience, a couple of years ago. They found it to be a generally positive experience:
I was happily surprised by how pleasant the experience was. I had paid for a Big Front Seat and yet the flight was still cheaper than a Delta economy ticket for the same route. Plus, I was able to use my Ritz card’s airline incidental fee reimbursement to refund the purchase of the Big Front Seat. The Big Front Seat was big and plush. And the flight attendants were super nice and attentive. The Big Front Seat is missing a number of things that you’ll find on most other regional first class products: Spirit’s seats don’t recline and do not have video screens. Plus, unless you have Spirit Gold status, there are no complementary snacks or drinks. Still, the basic experience of getting from point A to point B was excellent.
It led Greg to rethink his allegiance to Delta for a brief minute by attempting a side-by-side comparison with Spirit on a trip to Florida with his son. The results were…mixed.
All that to say, for those who do fly the airline and/or enjoy it, this status match could be a very good value. You can enroll in just a few seconds and the match will then be valid for 12 months. Most of the fees you’d normally pay flying with Spirit would be waived with Gold status, so the cost of enrollment could pay itself back after only one flight (depending on seat selection, luggage, etc).
If you’re not planning on flying Spirit immediately, it would make sense to hold off for now, because you wouldn’t receive any benefit from the status match until your next time flying with them. However, Spirit hasn’t stated how long this program will be active and an end date hasn’t been published. I’d assume they’d announce an end to the program before it happens…but that’s just an assumption.
The timing of this program could yield additonal benefits, even if you don’t plan on keeping Spirit Gold. Since your twelve months of status will take you into the first few months of 2024, it could enable you to turn around and match your Spirit Status to other airlines at the start of the year. Depending on the status match program for the other airline(s), that timing could net you status with them for the rest of 2024.
Note that, unlike Spirit’s past status match challenges, you DO need to qualify for status in the traditional way to for it to continue once the initial 12 months are over (Spirit’s past challenges usually awarded status for the remainder of the current year and for the next calendar year). Still, even if you don’t plan on keeping the status, this match is probably worth considering for anyone who is planning on flying Spirit at least a couple of times over the next year.
And has anyone successfully used IHG/Marriott/Hilton/Choice status earned only through having the respective credit card to match to Spirit silver?
Thanks
Any way to get another airline to status match the Spirit Gold to something worthwhile? I have upcoming American, United, KLM/Air France, Egypt Air flights but am generally an airline free agent without loyalty. Thanks!
any easy status you can get to get on this match go round?
Has anyone had a positive experience flipping this status match to another? Tried with the Frontier deal last year, and it generally did not work as most of the valuable status matches required proof of travel that earned the match. I would imagine that would be the same here?
check that – there is Nick’s experience with Delta as one example…any others?
I applied today and was asked to provide a scan of my ID. Did so and was immediately rejected. Nothing weird about my ID, standard US State drivers license. Their FAQ says application fees are non-refundable. Not sure if I will trust this site in the future for applications. Sent an email to support asking for more details but I’m thinking I’m SOL.
Just curious if you had already applied for a status challenge before in the last 2 years?
Have not applied before for any kind of status match. Happily, an email to support seems to have resolved the issue. So, anyone running into a similar issue should definitely contact statusmatch’s customer support.
I received an email stating approval within 2 hours.
They still said it would take up to 5 business days to show on my account.
I figured what the heck. I have only flown Spirit once, but I am gonna see how valuable I can make this status match.
Do you need to already have the status before you book in order to receive the benefits? We already have a trip booked using Amex biz plat pay with points, and the prices are higher now so I can’t rebook. Would I receive any of the benefits if I matched before our existing flight next month?
I’m in the same situation. I read the FAQ and one of the answers stayes it only applies to tix booked after status is awarded.
Thanks. That’s what I figured
Just FYI, I did the match and was able to apply free bag and other benefits to my previously booked trip. There are some benefits that only apply to companions on the same reservation like priority boarding that look like they will only apply on a new booking for both passengers but I am getting it for me for the previous booking.
Awesome. Thanks for the follow-up!
Why would this be a good deal only if you travel “a couple of times”? Wouldn’t waiver of the bag fee alone, once, be worth more than the cost of the status match?
It depends on the status and the bag fee for the flight, but like I wrote in the post, many people will break even on the enrollment cost after only one flight. If it were me though, I wouldn’t go through the bother of enrolling, matching and using up my possibility for another match within the next two years to just break even. That why I wouldn’t do it unless I was flying Spirit at least twice, then it becomes a much better value.
My wife was Gold on Spirit due to an earlier status match. A big negative was that if we traveled together, her benefits did not extend to me even if we were in the same reservation. I doubt that has changed and is I think quite different from most other US-based airlines (i.e. worth mentioning as many folks would just assume a couple on the same rez would both enjoy the benefits of the Gold member).
That’s a really good point.
I understand if the free baggage benefit doesn’t extend to the co-traveller. But are they stingy to not even extend seat selection benefits? That would make it worthless if I was booking with other travelers.
Right. This is the problem. Companions get zero benefits travelling with a Spirit elite member. So everyone you normally travel with would have to pony up the $99 or suffer. Kind of a deal killer.
Wow, this is why I always read the comments! We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids) and this is a deal breaker. With the Frontier Status Match, my wife and 3 kids had free seat selections, bags, carry-one, and priority boarding. What’s the point in this if I need to pay for all their bags and seat selections? (if I can even get seated with them). Definately not family-friendly!
Not for all the money in the world.
I agree it would be a bad deal for all the money in the world. Fortunately you only have to pay $49 or $99.
Hahahah brilliant!
