Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?

Follow along here!

A few months ago, American Airlines announced that they were revamping how you’d earn status in the AAdvantage program, moving to Loyalty Points that are earned not only through flying but through many other methods too.

The ability to earn Loyalty Points started on January 1, 2022, but the program wouldn’t start until March 1, 2022. Well, it’s now March 1 which means Loyalty Points is now live.

American Airlines AAdvantage accounts now have a tracker on the account summary page which you can access here. As you can see above, it lists the number of Loyalty Points you’ve earned along with the tracker displaying your progress towards the various status levels.

I already have Executive Platinum status thanks to it being given to me a couple of years ago when some Hyatt Globalist members were targeted for that, with it subsequently being extended through March 31, 2023 due to COVID. I’m not anticipating much flight activity with American Airlines over the next couple of years where having status will help, so I haven’t been making an effort to earn Loyalty Points through the various avenues that could be worth it if AAdvantage status would provide value for you.

As a result, I’ve earned a measly 1,569 Loyalty Points so far this year which was the result of a Hyatt stay. In case you weren’t aware of this partnership, elite members earn 1 AAdvantage mile per dollar spent at Hyatt properties and so now also earn 1 Loyalty Point per dollar spent as a result.

You can track your earning activity here. You’ll see entries for individual earnings of redeemable miles, along with separate entries for Loyalty Points earnings. The Loyalty Points entries aren’t detailed as they’re simply headed ‘Promotion Bonus’, but the number of points earned should make it easy to match against your earnings of award miles.

American Airlines Loyalty Points earned

Don’t worry if your Loyalty Points balance is at zero even though you expect it to be higher due to activity in the first couple of months of 2022. American Airlines had previously advised the following:

Starting March 1, 2022, Loyalty Points from new eligible activity will post to your AAdvantage account. If you earned Loyalty Points from eligible activity between January 1 and February 28, 2022, they’ll be in your account in early March 2022.

It could therefore be a week or two before the Loyalty Points show up on your account and so I wouldn’t be unduly worried if they’ve not been credited yet.

I am at 26k but 11k of those have been clawed back, so they have overstated mine.

Peter

I have / never had AA status. I see sometime today my LPs posted properly from Credit Card (Aviator), AA eShopping and AA Dining purchases.

Ann L Forstenzer

Can you earn those hyatt/aa partnership points if you’ve stayed at a hyatt on hyatt points? Do you only earn on paid stays?

kathy

My credit card spend, actual flights and Simply Miles seem to have converted to Loyalty Points but none of my eshopping miles. I expected 80,000 loyalty points but it is only showing 13,000. I hope more will still come in.

John

I still have zero LP even though I have 40K in mixed flights, credit card spend, eshopping, dining, simply miles and shell gas. Seems to be trickling in slowly and it’s killing me that I still have nothing!

Nate

Is it possible these are trickling in? I see my loyalty points but it’s way off from what I tracked on my own—unless they decided to calculate base and bonus miles completely differently.

G Wil

I wish I had seen your warning first. I have 52,000 Loyalty Points via credit card from Feb 21. Account tracker says zero LP. Call AA today March 01. Reps had no idea what I was talking about and bounced me around for an hour before I gave up.

Afam-dfw

My account shows over 200k LP but my status was upgraded to Pro rather than Exec.

jeph36

Mine is sitting at 0 LP right now, but I can see all my expected activity is there. So I assume it will update in a few days. I am not going to be Gold out of the gate, ~half there right now. It would be nice to push for Platinum, but I am not going to go too far out of my way for it.

Gigi

7 segments away from Platinum Pro with 2 roundtrips planned in the next 2 weeks. I thought that I had read somewhere that we had until March 31 to complete. So close, not too hopeful though with the new point system thus far.

Greg

I would just point out that we better start to burn those 500-mile certificates because they will convert to 250 Loyalty Points each later this year! You’ve been warned…

Paul

But why burn them?
You won’t need them after the switch, so I feel like you might as well let them turn into loyalty points unless you have a worthwhile opportunity to use them now.

Andrea

You will need them if you have more than 2 fliers on the itinerary.

Elizabeth

I should be Gold, I have 38,000 miles and haven’t taken a flight.

A B

My account says they’ll post between March 1-5.

Troy

Yes, app states 1-5 which seems fair for this big of a changeover
