Guide to booking Preferred Hotels with points

Many, but not all, Preferred Hotels can be booked with points. Of those, some can be booked using Preferred Hotels’ own I Prefer points, some can be booked using Choice points, and some can be booked using both. If you have a Citi Strata Premier card, Citi Strata Elite card, or the no-longer-available Prestige or AT&T Access More card, you can transfer Citi ThankYou points 1 to 2 to Choice or 1 to 4 to I Prefer. Further, if you have a Wells Fargo Autograph or Autograph Journey card, you can transfer Wells Fargo points 1 to 2 to Choice.

The ability to transfer points from credit card programs at a better than 1 to 1 ratio means that there are some great values to be had. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the technology behind the ability to book Preferred Hotels with points is far from fully baked. Things can go wrong and often do. That said, we’ve already seen improvements in some parts of the process, and so I believe that people are working on improving and fixing the system. At some point, we should be able to reliably book Preferred Hotels with points. Until then, I advise pushing forward only if you’re willing to accept the frustration if things go wrong.

Two points programs: I Prefer and Choice Privileges

It’s possible to book many (but not all) Preferred Hotels with Preferred Hotels’ own points (I Prefer points) or with Choice Privileges points. To use I Prefer points, you must join the I Prefer loyalty program at iprefer.com, and then you can search for awards here. To use Choice points, you must join the Choice Privileges loyalty program and then you can search for awards here.

Point prices are not the same across I Prefer and Choice

Choice usually charges fewer points than I Prefer. At the time of this writing, the highest number of Choice points required is 87,000 points per night, whereas I Prefer charges up to 150,000 points per night.

Point availability differs between I Prefer and Choice

While many properties can be booked using either program’s points, some can only be booked with I Prefer points, and others can only be booked with Choice points.

Further, availability differs within properties. For example, I was able to book a hotel with Choice points during dates when the property was not available to book with I Prefer points.

Point prices are fixed within a single property

Both programs have fixed point prices. Within a single hotel, point prices don’t vary based on the date of your stay. That said, I Prefer or Choice can change the fixed rate for a hotel at any time.

I Prefer usually offers better value when starting with Citi points

Choice generally has lower point prices than I Prefer. That said, if you get your points by transferring from Citi ThankYou Rewards, then I Prefer is usually a better value because Citi transfers 1 to 4 to I Prefer vs. 1 to 2 to Choice.

Some Preferred Hotels are also Choice hotels

Some Nordic hotels are available to book two different ways with Choice points because they’re available both directly through Choice and through the Preferred Hotels partnership. Here are the hotels I’ve found so far that fit this pattern (along with Choice point price for booking direct vs. booking through Preferred Hotels). You’ll see that it’s almost always better to book directly through Choice when available.

How to get I Prefer points

You can, of course, earn I Prefer points through paid stays with Preferred Hotels. The best way to get I Prefer points, though, is to get a Citi Strata Premier card or Citi Strata Elite card to unlock the ability to transfer Citi ThankYou Rewards points 1 to 4 to I Prefer. How to get Choice Privileges points

You can get Choice Privileges points through paid stays at Choice Privilege properties (but not at Preferred Hotels). Another option is to buy Choice points when they go on a particularly good sale (sometimes you can buy points for as little as .5 or .6 cents each). The best way, though, is through credit cards:

Wells Fargo Autograph: Get an Autograph or Autograph Journey card to unlock the ability to transfer Wells Fargo points 1 to 2 to Choice.
Wells Fargo Choice Privileges: Wells Fargo offers two Choice Privileges credit cards. Either one could be a good choice for a welcome bonus, but the $95 card is a better bet, thanks to the fact that it offers 30,000 points every year upon renewal. Booking with I Prefer points

There are multiple ways to book Preferred Hotels with points. Each is explained below…

All points vs Points + Cash

Regardless of which method you use to book a Preferred Hotel with points, you may be offered the choice to book entirely with points or with a combination of points and cash. Most of this guide is about booking entirely with points. When booking with Points + Cash you should think of the points component as being a way to reduce the cash cost of your stay by a fixed amount. Sometimes that option offers good value, but sometimes not. In fact, I’ve seen situations where the cash component is higher than the cost of booking the hotel entirely with cash!

As far as I can tell, this seems to be the most reliable method. Search for I Prefer Reward Nights here:

Via this site, you can change a drop-down to show rates in Cash (the default), Points, or Points + Cash. In my experience, this option seems to leave out some points-bookable hotels that can be found through iprefer.com. This URL will take you directly to the all-points option:

Book via the hotel’s website

With some Preferred Hotels, but definitely not all of them, their booking screen offers an option to “Use I Prefer Points.”

Booking Problems

Unfortunately, the entire process of booking Preferred Hotels with points is fraught with problems. While some people have reported success, many others have faced issues:

Unable to find available dates: From the Preferred Hotels website, you can search a location for specific dates and then show Points rates. This should filter to hotels that are available to book with points for those dates. In my experience, it sometimes works that way and sometimes does not. In some cases, when you click through from the search results to the availability calendar you find that the hotel is not actually available to book with points after all.
Available dates not actually bookable: Sometimes you’ll get through to the calendar showing dates available to book with points, but then when clicking through to select rooms, the option to pay with points doesn’t show up.
Miscellaneous website bugs: Weird stuff happens all the time. For example, when searching for available hotels, the number of search results randomly changes each time you re-run the search.
Unable to transfer Citi points to iPrefer:
- Citi’s ThankYou portal doesn’t recognize my iPrefer ID as valid and won’t let me even try to transfer points
- Potential Solution: Create a new iPrefer account with a new email address. Make sure to verify the new email address.

Unable to use points after transferring:
- Arthur wrote: “This has been a disaster for me. Just transferred Citi points for a booking and I can’t even book it. No matter what property I try to book, I get this error: Booking Error (501): There was a problem with your reservation. Please double-check your reservation details and try again.”
- Gary wrote: “It has been 9 days since I transferred Citi to I Prefer. I still can’t book the hotel I want despite daily calls into I Prefer, numerous emails to their support, and an email back saying that the ‘problem has been fixed.’”
- Potential Solution: Make sure to verify your email after creating your iPrefer account.
Post-booking issues:
- I’ve heard multiple times from readers that they had booked Preferred Hotels through Choice and the hotel had no record of this when they showed up for their stay. Similarly, a reader tried to cancel an existing booking made through Choice and the hotel had no record of the stay. While I don’t know if the same thing is likely to happen with reservations booked with iPrefer points, I think it is likely. It is critical to confirm your stay with the hotel after booking!
- Some hotels simply don’t know how to deal with points bookings. One hotel tried to charge me the full rack rate even after I had paid with Choice points!

FAQ

How can I earn points quickly?

The best way to earn points quickly is through credit card welcome bonuses:

Citibank: Get a Citi Strata Premier card or Citi Strata Elite card to unlock the ability to transfer Citi ThankYou Rewards points 1 to 4 to I Prefer, or 1 to 2 to Choice. For ideas for how to earn Citi points, see this post: Citi ThankYou Rewards Complete Guide.
Wells Fargo Autograph: Get an Autograph or Autograph Journey card to unlock the ability to transfer Wells Fargo points 1 to 2 to Choice.
Wells Fargo Choice Privileges: Wells Fargo offers two Choice Privileges credit cards. Either one could be a good choice for a welcome bonus, but the $95 card is a better bet thanks to the fact that it offers 30,000 points every year that you renew. Details here: 2 new Choice cards are available & one of them is a keeper.

Do I Prefer points expire?

Yes. Points will expire after 24 months of membership inactivity. You can easily reset the clock by earning points (including transferring more points from Citibank) or by using points.

Do Choice Privileges points expire?

Yes. Choice Privileges points expire after 18 months of inactivity. You can easily reset the clock by earning points (including transferring more points from a bank like Citibank or Wells Fargo) or by using points.

If I transfer points to I Prefer or Choice, can I reverse the process if I don’t use the points?

No. When you transfer points from a bank’s transferable points program, the transfer is final. Think of it as being like buying I Prefer or Choice points with your bank points.

How can I verify my booking?

After you book with points, you should get a confirmation email. But that’s not enough to verify your booking! It’s very important to check with the hotel directly to make sure that they have a record of your booking and that everything appears to be in order.

Will my I Prefer elite status benefits apply to my stay?

If you have elite status with I Prefer, your elite benefits should apply to your stay regardless of whether you book with Choice points or I Prefer points. If booking with Choice points, you may need to log in to I Prefer after making your booking and fill out their form to request that they connect the new stay to your account. In my case, when I’ve booked with Choice points, I’ve usually received an email some time later asking me if I’d like to connect the stay to my I Prefer account. If that happens, simply click through from the email to do so.

The reason I emphasized above that your elite benefits should apply is that not all Preferred Hotels do a good job of recognizing elite status. For example, I had a stay where the desk agent acknowledged that they could see my Titanium status but I still didn’t receive a welcome gift or any other perk that should have applied.

Will I earn I Prefer elite credit for a stay booked with points?

No.

Will my Choice Privileges elite status benefits apply to my stay?

No. Choice Privileges status is not recognized by Preferred Hotels.

Will I earn Choice Privileges elite credit for a stay booked with points?

No.

Hi FM team – A lot of high value redemption properties have recently disappeared from the iprefer.com list of ‘reward nights’ which as you know are pure points bookings. For example, The Mandeville (London) was removed from ‘reward nights’ redemption after Tim’s 100K Vacay post. That property is now only bookable via ‘reward nights plus’ aka cash and points. It seems that the Last Word safari properties have also become cash and points only as well.

There can be lots of value with iPrefer reward nights, but it unfortunately seems that properties can make no notice changes to the types of redemptions available at any time. This is complicated by the preferredhotels.com site listing participating iPrefer properties as ‘bookable with points’ even if they are only bookable as cash and points. The iPrefer site lists 243 properties available on cash and points
and 196 properties available on points only.

Therefore it would be wise for anyone considering transfers to iPrefer to go all the way through the booking process before transferring their TYP to confirm that an all points redemption is actually available and if it is to make that reward booking on the same day that you transfer your points.

I booked two hotels in Ireland using iPrefer points: Castlemartyr and The Europe hotels. I got good value out of these, but let me second the cautionary note mentioned in the article. When I checked out of The Europe, I had a mystery charge for 330 EUR on my folio. The hotel was insisting I should pay for these “taxes and fees” that were not covered by the points reservation. After much back and forth where I showed that these fees were not disclosed, and that the math didn’t make sense if those were any kind of tax, they relented and removed them. My suspicion is that I’m this was the rate that iPrefer pays the hotel. Pay attention to your bill, and you might need to argue quite a bit with the hotel about your charges. The integration between iPrefer and the hotel reservation systems appears to be really bad.

Im trying to book a Preferred Hotel using Choice Points, I am getting an Error Code 200 at one specific hotel no matter what dates I choose. I have a feeling that means the hotel is not actually bookable with Choice Points.

I booked 2 nights at Palace de chine in Taipei, Taiwan China a few days ago for 30k iprefer points per night, a great deal. Today when I checked the website again, the hotel is no longer bookable with points. Weird

Thanks for a great post. Very helpful. I’ve booked 3 hotels on choice website for Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen that are much cheaper than the cash rates which are $300+ a night for 15k points. I’ve book marked your search function.

Do we have data on how often iPrefer members get upgraded rooms? The hotel I’m looking at only offers one room type for awards points, but the program page says Silver members get an “enhanced room upgrade” benefit.

Virgin NYC: no upgrade or late checkout despite rooms available for booking in the Virgin app. Did not apply F&B credit to minibar after they said it would work. Welcome amenity on day 2 (cookies).
Titanium status.
Small rooms, but good points value (close to 1 cpp) and it was the location/neighborhood we wanted

It depends on the individual hotel. At one I stayed at I didn’t get any benefits as a top-tier Titanium

Any idea if you can book iPrefer rewards for friends/family? The T&C don’t seem to address it and I don’t have any points to get to the checkout screen

I called today and they said the member has to be the one checking in. I asked if I could add additional names on the reservation and was told no.

Did you call Preferred Hotels or the hotel itself? I bet that if you book through I Prefer, you can then contact the hotel and add additional names.

I booked a room with Choice Hotels through Preferred Hotels and Resorts last year. It is a better rate to book through IPreferred. The problem is one of the nights is sold out at the property. If I cancel my Preferred reservation, will that room be available for an award night? Does IPreferred allow each standard room to be booked with points?

There’s no way to know if it will become available. No, they don’t require every standard room to be available for points. Additionally, availability is different between Choice and I Prefer. I would keep my existing booking if I were you.

I’m considering booking the Landmark Bangkok (Preferred). The rate is 15,000 I Prefer points that cost me 3,750 TY points (1:4). If those are valued at $0.0145 the room cost would be $54.38 + $6.43 (tax) + $20 (breakfast)=$80.81. Direct cash booking including breakfast is $200. Assuming $80.81/0.0145=5573 then 200/5573=$0.036/TY point. If I am correct, this is a very good value.

So I saw your recent post on the 2 I Prefer South African Game lodges recently and it’s spurred me to make a RSA vacation for October..including Cape Town and your favorite hotel there in Constatntia: The Cellars-Hohenort,(A hilton/ SLH property). Thanks for the info. I-Prefer has some awesome boutique properties and the CTY- IP @ 1:4 makes them a real bargain!

Hi Greg – Once again an awesome and extremely valuable post/ reference guide.

Readers please note there’s a 6-7 day delay in transferred CTY points into I Prefer before you can actually use them for a reservation. As noted in a previous post, the CTY to I Prefer transfer partnership is recent (Oct 2024). Your transferred points will appear in your I Prefer account, but there’s no indication that they’re usable for a reservation, until your reservation won’t complete. I spent 20 mins today with a phone agent (Note agents with any knowledge only operate 8AM-5PM EST daily ONLY) Out of hours the booking clerks are basic operators only.) He confirmed its a known problem they are working on.
