There is a newly-increased offer on the Business Platinum Card from American Express that is only available via referral and is good for up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points, though it requires heavy spend: get 50K points after $10K spend in the first 3 months plus an additional 50K points after an additional $15K spend in the first 3 months. That’s only an increase of $5K in the spending component over the more typical offer. While that’s a lot of spend in 3 months, I suspect those who would have considered this card at the $20K spending requirement can likely handle the increase in spend — in which case, it’s worth a look now with this increased offer.

Quick Thoughts

Again, the spending requirement for this offer is obviously high — you’ll need to be able to spend $25K in 3 months and Amex has made it clear that they aren’t fond of gift card purchases for minimum spending requirements. This offer is therefore most useful for those with high monthly expenses or perhaps high tax payments to make. Keep in mind that Simon Mall purchases are earning 0 points, so don’t be tempted to hit up Simon for the $1K Visa Gift Cards to meet your spending requirements.

However, for those able to meet the requirements here, this is a nice offer. There are occasional targeted mail offers good for up to 150K and/or for 100K with a lower spending requirement (and some people have had success in calling in to request the 100K offer that requires $10K spend). Keep in mind that you could also open multiple cards with lesser spend requirements in order to earn 100K points. On the other hand, the Business Platinum comes with a couple of nice benefits in addition to the slew of benefits that come on personal Platinum cards (See: Which is the best Platinum card?). The new twice-annual $100 Dell credit and points rebate on your selected airline and business and first class fares are fairly valuable benefits. That said, the newly-increased $595 annual fee on this card makes it questionable for the long term. The welcome offer here is the main attraction.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t refer yourself (but a referral to or from a spouse should be no problem). The person referring you can now get 20K points if they have generated their referral link from their Business Platinum card (up to an annual cap of 55K points). Find more information about this card and a link to apply on our dedicated Business Platinum card page.
