We have been writing quite a bit about the Capital One Venture X since it launched last November. It’s a strong ultra-premium card that, to my mind, more than offsets its annual fee with travel credits and an anniversary bonus while offering perhaps the best authorized user benefits currently available.
There has been a 100K offer since the card was launched that was recently sweetened with a $200 credit towards vacation rentals, putting it in the top 4 of the first-year values on our Best Offers page. This will expire Monday 3/14, making it the last day to apply for the current offer. I applied for it last week and Mrs. Miler was (happily!) approved on Friday.

75K Miles ⓘ Affiliate 75k miles after $4k spend within first 3 months. (Rates & Fees)$395 Annual Fee Recent better offer: Expired 3/14/22: 100K after $10K spend in 6 months + $200 credit for vacation rental spend in first year FM Mini Review: This card offers annual rebates that easily mitigate the fee for those who travel often. Authorized users are free and also get access to perks like Priority Pass, Capital One Lounges, Plaza Premium lounges, and more. The card earns 2 "miles" per dollar on most purchases just like the Capital One Venture Rewards card, which are worth exactly 1 cent each toward travel. This makes the return on most spend similar to a 2% cash back card (though in this case you must redeem your miles to offset travel in order to get 1 cent per mile). One huge advantage over cash back: Capital One allows transfering their "miles" to airline miles & hotel points. Quick Thoughts
Thie Venture X comes with a slew of perks easily worth its annual fee for anyone who travels:
- Annual credits that make the card revenue positive: The Venture X offers $300 in statement credits annually for all bookings made through Capital One Travel alongside 10,000 bonus miles each year upon renewal. Even if you only value the points at 1 cent each (I value them higher because of C1’s transfer partners), the combination of the two completely offsets the $395 annual fee
- 10x points for hotels and car rentals booked through the Capital One Portal
- 5x points for flights booked through the Capital One Portal
- Priority Pass Membership that includes restaurants (unlike Amex premium cards)
- Primary rental car CDW up to $75K
- Cell phone protection up to $800 per claim with a $50 deductible on up to 2 claims per year
- Trip delay protection kicks in after six hours (up to $500 per ticket)
- Trip cancellation protection up to $2,000 per person for common carrier fares
- Access to Capital One Lounges (The only currently open lounge is in DFW)
- All card benefits apply to free authorized user as well – the fact that there is no charge for AU’s AND that they get the priority pass and travel insurance benefits makes this the best AU card out there.

Capital One can be notoriously quirky for approvals. I’ve seen folks under 5/24 with an 800+ credit score get rejected while folks with rotating balances and much lower scores get automatic approval. There’s some conjecture that C1 actually prioritizes folks who carry balances, unlike most issuers, because they are more profitable due to interest payments. There’s no real proof of that, however.
I applied last week, having never had a C1 card before, and was instantly approved. Greg, on the other hand, has had a painful history.
That said, this is a terrific card and I can’t imagine that we’ll see a much better bonus in the near future. If you’re interested, now’s the time to strike.
Any ideas on if capitalone cares about buying gift cards to meet SUB?
They haven’t seemed to be terribly concerned. I put about 6-7K of GC spend on the SUB for this myself.
If I book a flight thru C1 portal on delta, and received the $300 credit. What happens if I need to cancel the flight later? Do I just get a delta travel credit?
@Greg @Nick Reyes – Any idea if Capital One removed the person to person transfer? I see screen shots showing it live as recently as end of Feb, but I can’t find it in my account.
You can’t transfer person to person online (never have been able to do it online yourself), you have to call the number on the back of your card to transfer person to person.
You move between your own accounts by hitting “Redeem” then “Move Rewards”. I just now logged in and verified that option still exists and can be done between your own accounts.
Are you sure they still support it (just looking to save hold time before calling)
I saw a post from Febuary (differnet site) that showed this feature on line and saw a comment on another thread here saying they stopped allowing it alltogether.
PS – Thanks for the quick response.
Confirmed – @Nick Reyes is correct. Despite another blog showing a change that is no longer even on the website.
Quick call instant transfer and very friendly people with a sub 2min total call time – Color me impressed.
So the new offer (now that the 100K after $10K in spend has expired) is 75K with $4K spend. Isn’t this actually a better deal EVEN with the $200 vacation home (i.e. Airbnb, vrbo, etc.) rental not there anymore? Lmk if I’m missing something here but when I do the math, spending 10K for 100K in points equals a 10% return at the minimum. I realize could be a lot more when transfer but for now let’s just use that math or even could double that and say 20% (2cts per point) return for this equation. But now this new deal is spending $4k for 75K bonus points = 18.75% return on spend at the minimal value of 75K points equaling $750 value or 37.5% at higher end of viewing pts worth double/2cts. That leaves the delta of the prior offer of having to spend 6K more for 25K more in points which is a 4.2% return at minimum/8.4% return at the higher end of valuation on those Cap1 points. Wouldn’t someone do better taking that $6K in spend and direct it to another sign up bonus? For example, could spend $4k for a 60k points with Chase Sapphire Preferred and still have $2k left to do another card such as the Southwest current offer or so many others. Thoughts from the Frequent Milers?
One interesting thing after applying for the card – you can go to the link below and see your credit score that was pulled.

Instant approval! Would adding my wife as an authorized user limit her chances of getting the card in the future?
I was listening to your Podcast this past Saturday, March 12, 2022, and you mentioned that you have to provide SS# for your added authorize user and I wanted to clarify that while it is there as a field, it isn’t actually required. SO, Greg could actually have his wife add him w/o provided his notorious SS# that apparently flags him with Cap1. LOL
Thanks for reminding me! I thought the same thing. I’ll forward this on to Greg
any DP on what counts as vacation rentals besides the norm?? Thanks!
Thank you for your many incredibly helpful content – LOVE all that I’ve learned thru FM! Just applied thru your link and got Instant Approval. And thrilled that I can support FM and happily surprised Approval went so easily (DP: I have 1 active but low spent card w/ Cap1, 11 other CC and 800+ FICO, don’t carry balances)
Terrific! Thanks for the kind words and for supporting the site!
I applied through a Frequent Miler link for this card. Thanks for running a great website!
I applied last Sunday using one of the Frequent Miler links, so hopefully, you received an incentive out of it. I love your website and am pleased to support it. Thanks to what I owe in taxes to the federal government, I already put $6500 on the card so I’m well on my way to hitting my $10K SUB spend.
That’s great, CJ! Thanks for the support and for reading!
Does anyone know for the Hertz President’s Circle status, will it be honored if I book Hertz through CapOne travel portal?
Yep, it is.
Thank you Tim, I am considering booking through the portal the Manager’s special type which only guarantees 4 seat and 1 luggage, do you think with President status they would still let me pick any car in the lot?
I read recently (but unable to find the link now) that economy, compact and manager’s special are the only car types which do not allow to pick your own car in the lot. Advised to book midsize or medium car type. Also your gold rewards number should be in the booking to get the President’s circle benefits. Pls check if CapOne portal allows to enter the number.
I booked a car thru portal but couldn’t figure out how to become a “hertz President circle member” from having venture x card, so lost out on benefits.
Called capital 1 and was referred to hertz. Called hertz and was referred to capital one.
I followed the instructions on this page titled “Elevate Your Travel Experience With Hertz and Capital One” to first sign up for a new account and now waiting to confirm the upgrade to President circle. Supposed you can use your existing account.
Too bad back in January, no one had the answer on my week long rental in Hawaii.
Turned out they only auto-upgraded me to Five Stars, I had to text to 855-800-2166 and showed them screen shot of my Cap One Venture X card and they instantly matched to President’s circle, shouldn’t have been this difficult. But also confirmed with them I need to book directly with Hertz to enjoy the President circle benefit, does not honor if thru a portal like Cap One.
able to apply on 3/14 or is 3/13 the last day?
3/14 is fine as well. Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll make it more clear
Thanks for the reminder. I applied and was denied due to too many cards open, or something to that effect. Applied for wife today and was instantly approved. She has 2 C1 cards.
Does the two cards include the new Venture X? Or does she now have three cards after getting the Venture X?
