During our recent Ask Us Anything, one of the questions we received was how to get great value from Membership Rewards points right now.
One of the suggestions I had was that if they had an Amex Platinum card, there were some routes where you could book greatly discounted tickets in all fare classes. I referred them to Bethany’s post on Bougie Miles as she was the one who discovered the sale.
The way it works is that until December 31, 2020, you can book select domestic flights for travel through March 31, 2021. You can search online here, but note that the discount is only available if you have a personal or business Amex Platinum card.
I was trying to write a post today giving some examples of the discounts available, but struck out in every instance. No matter which dates and routes I entered – even the same ones that Bethany had success with – there weren’t any ‘Recommended Flight’ options to be seen.
That’s a shame because that isn’t the only element of how this is a great deal. If you want to pay cash for the flights, you can pay with an Amex Platinum card to earn 5x Membership Rewards. If you have an Amex Business Platinum card, you also have the option to pay with Membership Rewards and get a 35% rebate. That rebate is valid on all first class and business class flights, as well as on economy flights for the airline you have selected for the airline fee credit.
Although I didn’t have any success whatsoever with finding discounted flights, that doesn’t necessarily mean this opportunity is over. The offer page at the above link is still valid and is still advertising this promotion, so it’s hopefully not completely dead yet. If you’re a Platinum cardholder who’ll be booking domestic flights for travel through the end of March 2021, it’s worth being aware of this offer just in case you manage to find a great deal.
