Transfer Partner Master List

Updates:

  • This post now includes indirect transfer partners (transfer to one program in order to then transfer to another)
  • Added Brex transfer partners

Amex Transfer Partners

In my opinion, transferable points programs are the most valuable points to accumulate.  These points can often be used at better than 1 cent per point value to book travel.  Even better, points can be strategically transferred to airline and hotel programs when valuable awards are available.  This page details all of the point transfers available from a number of bank programs as well as from Marriott Bonvoy.

If you prefer spreadsheets, you can find the Google Docs version of this post here.

For more about transferable points programs, please see: Transferable Points Programs Compared.

Tips

Read all about each program:

Don’t transfer yet: Don’t transfer points until high value awards are available and you are ready to book them.  Transfers are one-way only.  Transferable points are valuable for their flexibility. Once you transfer, you are locked into a single program that may or may not have awards available.

Share points: Most of the guides listed above detail how to share points with others.

Watch for transfer bonuses: Amex and Citi often offer improved transfer ratios through limited time transfer bonuses.  And, sometimes airlines offer bonuses for transfers from hotels so that can be a good way to use Marriott points.

It’s sometimes cheaper to pay with points: Most bank programs offer ways to pay for travel with points rather than transferring those points to airline or hotel programs. Sometimes you’ll spend fewer points this way.

Current Transfer Bonuses

Here is a list of all of the current transfer bonuses we’re aware of:

Best Transfer Partners

The following list of transfer partners are limited to those that we find most useful. Plenty of other programs are useful for select purposes and so you’ll find details about those later in this post.

Accor Live Limitless

Best Uses: Use to pay hotel bill with value of 2 Euro cents per point. In some cases (such as hotel to airline transfer bonuses) it may make sense to convert Accor points to the following airline miles at a 1 to 1 ratio: Finnair, Iberia, Qantas, or Virgin Australia

1000 to 500 (Unknown)
Air Canada Aeroplan

Best Uses: Redeem for Star Alliance flights and/or flights with Air Canada partners (such as Etihad). No fuel surcharges; $39 CAD award booking fee; 5,000 points to add stopover on one-way award. See: Air Canada Aeroplan: Everything you need to know.

Air France KLM Flying Blue

Best Uses: Monthly Air France Promo Awards often represent very good value. Air France miles can be used to book Sky Team awards, including Delta awards.

Alaska MileagePlan

Best Uses: Alaska Airlines has a number of great partners and offers reasonable award prices for most of them. Unlike most other programs, Alaska allows stop-overs one one-way awards. This makes it possible to stretch award value much further. Travel Codex offers an excellent overview to booking Alaska Airlines awards here.

60K to 25K (~2 days)
American AAdvantage

Best Uses: Best for AA's web special awards or for partner awards such as Cathay Pacific business class, Qatar business class, Etihad first class, etc. AA no longer charges change or cancellation fees on awards.

60K to 25K (~2 days)1 to 1 (Unknown)
ANA Mileage Club

Best Uses: Redeem for Star Alliance flights. Multiple stopovers allowed. ANA offers many great sweet-spot awards, including flying around the world in business class for as few as 115K miles! See also: ANA - a terrific Membership Rewards gem.

1 to 1 (~1 day)60K to 25K (4 to 7 days)
Asiana

Best Uses: Redeem only 50K miles for one-way first class Star Alliance awards between US and Europe! Beware very high fuel surcharges when flying airlines such as Lufthansa.

60K to 25K (~1 day)
Avianca LifeMiles

Best Uses: Avianca LifeMiles can be great for Star Alliance awards. They offer reasonable award prices and no fuel surcharges on awards. They also offer shorthaul awards within the US (for flying United, for example) for as few as 7,500 miles one-way. Best of all, their mixed-cabin pricing can lead to fantastic first-class award prices. See this post for details.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)60K to 25K (~1 day)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Best Uses: Cathay Pacific has a decent distance based award chart, but they no longer allow stopovers longer than 24 hours. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles can be a good option for booking American Airlines flights with a distance based award chart, especially if other OneWorld Alliance miles aren't available. For long distance flights, it is possible to reduce the cost of first class by adding on a business class flight. See this post for details.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)60K to 25K (~1 day)1 to 1 (4 to 5 days)1 to 1 (Unknown)
Hyatt

Best Uses: Use for Hyatt free nights, free suite nights, lounge upgrades, or suite upgrades. Hyatt points are often worth at least 1.5 cents each, but they’re sometimes worth far more. One hidden bonus: award nights are not subject to resort fees.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
JAL (Japan Airlines) Mileage Bank

Best Uses: JAL has a distance based partner award chart. Depending upon the length of the flights, this can lead to great award prices on partners such as Emirates and Korean Air.

60K to 25K (~2 days)
Korean Airlines

Best Uses: Korean Air is known for having top notch business and first class on their international flights. Plus, first class tends to be wide open for awards. Korean is also a fantastic program for booking certain partner awards. For example, it is possible to book Delta flights from the US mainland to Hawaii for only 25,000 points round trip in coach or 45,000 points in first class.

60K to 25K (~1 day)
United MileagePlus

Best Uses: Like Avianca and Aeroplan, United never charges fuel surcharges for awards. Unfortunately, United usually charges more miles for the same awards that are bookable with other Star Alliance miles. One good use of miles is to make use of United's Excursionist Perk awards. United no longer charges change or cancellation fees on awards cancelled at least 30 days prior to booking.

Airline Loyalty Programs

In most cases it is free to transfer points.  One exception is with Amex.  For transfers to US airlines only, Amex usually charges an “excise tax offset fee” of $0.0006 per point (with a maximum fee of $99). Airlines subject to this fee are noted below.

I love this compilation! I think another possible addition (maybe in an “other” column) to the hotel options is Amtrak to Choice 1:3. While not the best, with the annual fee variety card required and hefty spending requirements for transfer, the transfer options to hotels so seldom make sense except Hyatt that it’s good to have some viable alternatives.

great resource, my only worry with UR is if chase gets the notion they can shut you down and take them back. My wife has 250k of them and I feel the need to transfer about half of those out just to limit exposure.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to do this!
