Complete List of Transferable Points Partners

119

Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?

Follow along here!

In my opinion, transferable points programs are the most valuable points to accumulate.  These points can often be used at better than 1 cent per point value to book travel and, even better, points can be strategically transferred to airline and hotel programs when valuable awards are available.

This page details all of the point transfers available from a number of bank programs.

Point Transfer Bonuses

A word about Marriott

Marriott offers a huge number of transfer partners, most of which transfer from Marriott 3 to 1.  I decided that this “Master List” page would be easier to read if I limited it to transferable points programs that offer 1 to 1 transfers to most programs.  All Marriott transfer options can be found here: Marriott Bonvoy Transfer Partners.

Point Transfer Tips

Read all about each major transferable currency program:

Don’t transfer speculatively: Don’t transfer points until high value awards are available and you are ready to book them.  Transfers are one-way only.  Transferable points are valuable for their flexibility. Once you transfer, you are locked into a single program that may or may not have awards available.

Share points: Most of the guides listed above detail how to share points with others.

Watch for transfer bonuses: Amex, Capital One, and Citi often offer improved transfer ratios through limited time transfer bonuses.

It’s sometimes cheaper to pay with points: Most bank programs offer ways to pay for travel with points rather than transferring those points to airline or hotel programs. Sometimes you’ll spend fewer points this way.

Best Transfer Partners

Aer Lingus Avios

Best Uses: Fuel surcharges are sometimes lower when booking with Aer Lingus rather than British Airways, Qatar, or Iberia. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar.  See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 via Qatar (~1 day)1 to 1 via BA (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
Air Canada Aeroplan

Best Uses: Redeem for Star Alliance flights and/or flights with Air Canada partners (such as Etihad). No fuel surcharges; $39 CAD award booking fee; 5,000 points to add stopover on one-way award. See: Air Canada Aeroplan: Everything you need to know.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)
Air France KLM Flying Blue

Best Uses: Monthly Air France Promo Awards often represent very good value. Air France miles can be used to book Sky Team awards, including Delta awards. Air France often offers very good business class award pricing between the US and Europe & Israel.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
Alaska MileagePlan

Best Uses: Alaska Airlines offers decent oneworld award pricing, excellent short-distant pricing, and uniquely allows free stop-overs one one-way awards. Additionally, Alaska allows free award changes and cancelations (although they do have a small non-refundable partner award booking fee)

1 to 1 (Instant)
ANA Mileage Club

Best Uses: Redeem for Star Alliance flights. Multiple stopovers allowed. ANA offers many great sweet-spot awards, including flying around the world in business class for as few as 115K miles! See also: ANA - a terrific Membership Rewards gem.

1 to 1 (~1 day)
Avianca LifeMiles

Best Uses: Avianca LifeMiles can be great for Star Alliance awards. They offer reasonable award prices and no fuel surcharges on awards. They also offer shorthaul awards within the US (for flying United, for example) for as few as 7,500 miles one-way. Best of all, their mixed-cabin pricing can lead to fantastic first-class award prices. See this post for details.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
British Airways Avios

Best Uses: While flights on British Airways itself often incur outrageously high fuel surcharges, many BA partners charge low or no fuel surcharges. Excellent value can be had in redeeming BA points for short distance flights. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar. See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 via Qatar (~1 day)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Best Uses: Cathay Pacific has a decent distance based award chart, but they no longer allow stopovers longer than 24 hours. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles can be a good option for booking American Airlines flights with a distance based award chart, especially if other OneWorld Alliance miles aren't available. For long distance flights, it is possible to reduce the cost of a premium cabin award by adding on a lower cabin segment. See this post for details.

1 to 1 (~1 day)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (1 - 2 days)1 to 1 (Instant)
Hawaiian Miles

Best Uses: Hawaiian Miles can be converted instantly to Alaska Mileage Plan miles. Alaska Airlines offers decent oneworld award pricing, excellent short-distant pricing, and uniquely allows free stop-overs one one-way awards. Additionally, Alaska allows free award changes and cancelations (although they do have a small non-refundable partner award booking fee)

1 to 1 plus excise tax (Instant)
Hyatt

Best Uses: Use for Hyatt free nights, free suite nights, lounge upgrades, or suite upgrades. Hyatt points are often worth at least 2 cents each, but they’re sometimes worth far more. Bonus: award nights are not subject to resort fees.

1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)
Iberia Avios

Best Uses: On their own flights, Iberia offers low award prices and a very reasonable 25 Euro cancellation fee. Partner awards can offer good value under some circumstances as well, but these are usually nonrefundable. Fuel surcharges are sometimes lower when booking with Iberia rather than British Airways, Aer Lingus, or Qatar. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar. See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.

1 to 1 (~12 - 72 hours (slower over weekend))1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 via Qatar (~1 day)1 to 1 via BA (Instant)1 to 1 (Instant)1 to 1 (Unknown)
Leading Hotels of the World

Best Uses: It is often possible to get 8 cents per point value, or more from LHW points.

1K to 200 (Instant)
Qatar Privilege Club Avios

Best Uses: Qatar has reasonable award prices for flying Qatar itself. Points are now transferable 1 to 1 to British Airways (and from there to Aer Lingus or Iberia). It is now also possible to book JetBlue flights with Qatar Avios.

1 to 1 (12 - 24 hours)1 to 1 via BA (Instant)1 to 1 (~1 day)1 to 1 via BA (Instant)1 to 1 via BA (Instant)1 to 1 via BA (Unknown)
United MileagePlus

Best Uses: United offers free award changes and free cancelations. Like Avianca and Aeroplan, United never charges fuel surcharges for awards. Unfortunately, United charges many more miles for international first class awards. Good uses of miles include United's Excursionist Perk awards and (sometimes) dynamically priced United economy awards.

Airline Loyalty Programs

In most cases it is free to transfer points.  One exception is with Amex.  For transfers to US airlines only, Amex usually charges an “excise tax offset fee” of $0.0006 per point (with a maximum fee of $99). Airlines subject to this fee are noted below.

I just found an Amex to SAS EuroBonus transfer page. Do you know if Amex has recently added or is planning on adding SAS as a transfer partner?

https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/rewards/membership-rewards/partner/SAS-EuroBonus/SAS-01

Stephen Pepper

It looks like that’s for Amex cardholders in the UK rather than the US

Google Doc needs update! Club Carlson is long gone. Hotel points to airlines tab.

Andy

Ever consider color coding/shading the table cells so that it’s easier to see the ratios at a glance (saves some reading time of individual cells)?

E.g. The table “Indirect Transfers to Airline Loyalty Programs” could have 50K to 50K green, 50K to 40K yellow, 50K to 25K red, or something like that. It could be based on RRVs so that a cell like LHW 1k to 200 isn’t colored red as long as the RRV of the points before/after transfer are similar enough.
Even if you don’t feel my suggestion is necessary, thank you for the resource. I know it’s a lot of work!

Stuart

Even for someone who has used transfers for years, it can still get a little jumbled and confusing. Thanks for a very helpful piece, guys.

DaninMCI

Great resource. Maybe I missed it but I don’t see indirect transfers via Marriott. For example 1 Amex to 1 Marriott to AA 3:1 plus bonuses. I know it isn’t the best value but there have been some sweet spots and promo transfers over the years like during the Alaska, Virgin American merger period.

Alex King

Everyone just ignores Marriott for whatever reason

stvr

How is “Avios” not most useful? Glaring omission

stvr

fixed! please ignore!

You should insert a caveat about Delta: don’t waste your valuable points by transferring them to Delta. Delta has destroyed their loyalty program. They have devalued by more than 50%. Delta ‘Skypesos’ are now worth LESS than a penny each.

Billy Bob

Amex to Avianca is not instant. I’ve done it a few times and it’s never instant. Not sure what your definition of ‘instant’ is.
