Update: The promotion for which this post was based was an error which has now been fixed. The promo was intended only for a specific set of targeted users in Canada for Plastiq’s tax season campaign.
Plastiq is a service that lets you pay almost any bill with a credit card (read our complete guide here). Plastiq usually charges 2.5%, but they are currently running an unadvertised promotion where they charge only 1.5% for payments made with Mastercard credit cards. As long as you have a Mastercard that earns better than 1.5%, this can be a great way to pay your rent or mortgage, make tax payments, pay contractors, etc.
In this post, I’ve listed the best Mastercard credit cards to use for Plastiq bill payments in four categories: retention offers, signup offers, base spend (e.g. which Mastercards earn the best rewards for everyday spend), and big spend bonuses. In all of these cases, Plastiq can be a great way to increase spend in order to earn more points.
In addition to looking at the best picks from each list below, it’s interesting to note where multiple lists overlap. For example, the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard offers good value for spend (1.5X miles per dollar), but also offers bonuses with high spend: 7,500 bonus points with $15K cardmember year spend + an additional 7,500 points with $25K cardmember year spend; Also: 25 tier point towards elite status per $2,500 spend (max 50 tier points per month). Similarly, the CitiBusiness AAdvantage card currently has the top Mastercard signup offer, but also offers a big spend bonus: get a domestic companion ticket with $30K spend.
Ultimately, the best choice for you depends on which cards you currently have and whether or not you want to apply for new ones.
Best Mastercard retention offers
Most Citi credit cards are Mastercards. If you have any, it’s worth calling Citibank occasionally to tell an agent (not the computer!) that you want to cancel your card. You may then be given offers to encourage you to keep your card. A common retention offer for cards that earn ThankYou points is for 2 extra points per dollar, with a maximum of 35K bonus points.
Other Mastercard issuers may have good retention offers too, so it may be worth calling them as well.
Best Mastercard signup offers
The following list shows the best signup offers for Mastercard credit cards sorted with best estimated first year value on top:

Interesting. I appear to have enjoyed some of the benefits, though. Any danger of a clawback by plastiq?
I don’t know. Plastiq hasn’t answered my questions about that.
How about the Citi Double Cash card?
As far as I know, paying bills with Plastiq does NOT get 3x with AT&T Access More, anymore. If anyone has a recent contrary data point I would be very interested.
That’s correct.
