You might not like paying taxes, but when you pay taxes via credit card can be quite rewarding. The key is to earn credit card rewards that more than offset tax payment fees. For example, if you’ve signed up recently for a card that requires large spend to get a big welcome bonus, paying taxes via credit card can be the solution.

Here’s everything you need to know about paying taxes with credit cards…

5 reasons to pay federal taxes with a credit card or gift card

1. Profit w/ a 3% Cash Back card

A number of credit cards earn cash rewards greater than 2%. Some even earn 3% cash back:

  • The new/updated Paypal Mastercard will earn 3% cash back on all PayPal purchases. Details here. This approach will work only with the services that allow payment through PayPal.
  • The Discover It Miles card earns 3% for the first year of card membership (you earn 1.5% and then at the end of the year all cash back earned is doubled).

Since you’ll earn 3% cash back on both the base tax payment and the processing fees with the above cards, your profit will be slightly more than 1% of your tax payment.

Example:

  • $10,000 tax payment + 1.96% fee = $10,196
  • Cash back earned at 3% = $305.88
  • Profit = $305.88 – $196 = $109.88 (1.1% of $10K)

For more examples of cards that earn better than 2% rewards, see: Best Rewards for Everyday Spend.

2. Meet minimum spend requirements

If you recently signed up for new credit cards, chances are good that you have to spend thousands of dollars in order to earn the associated signup bonuses. Paying taxes is a cheap and easy way to accomplish that.

3. Buy points cheaply

Several credit cards offer as much as 1.5 transferable points or miles per dollar. In these cases, a 2% tax payment fee (rounding up a little) means that you can essentially buy miles for 1.3 cents each. Even better, some cards earn 2 transferable points per dollar for all qualifying purchases. With these 2X everywhere cards you can essentially buy points/miles for 1 cent each. Either way, if you plan to use your points toward high value awards, this is a cheap way to acquire those points.

2X Example:

  • $10,000 tax payment + 2% fee = $10,200
  • Miles earned at 2X = 20,400
  • Cost per mile = $200 / 20,400 = 0.98 cents per mile (round up to 1 cent per mile)

1.5X Example:

  • $10,000 tax payment + 2% fee = $10,200
  • Miles earned at 1.5X = 15,300
  • Cost per mile = $200 / 15,300 = 1.3 cents per mile

Cards that offer 2X transferable points per dollar:

Note that some cards offering 2x everywhere are not included below because their points are worth much less than airline miles. An example is that most Marriott cards offer 2x everywhere rewards.

  • Citi Double Cash: Earns 2 cents per dollar, uncapped. Cash rewards can be converted to ThankYou points, and when paired with a Citi Premier or Prestige card, those points can be transferred to a selection of airline and hotel programs.

4. Earn valuable big spend bonuses: elite status, free nights, companion pass, etc.

Many credit cards offer bonuses for meeting high spend thresholds. You can find a comprehensive list here: Best big spend bonuses. Here are a few examples:

  • Southwest Plus, Southwest Premier, or Southwest Business: With Southwest cards, when you earn 135,000 points in a calendar year (including points earned from credit card spend) you get a companion pass good for an unlimited number of flights for the rest of that year and all of the next calendar year.
  • Barclaycard JetBlue Plus, or JetBlue Business: Spend $50,000 and get Mosaic 1 status which offers free changes and cancellations; free checked bags; expedited security; early boarding; free drinks; enhanced point earnings; and 15,000 bonus points upon qualifying.

5. Liquidate Visa/MasterCard gift cards cheaply

Visa and MasterCard gift cards are debit cards. As such, they qualify for low flat fees for debit tax payments: $2.14, $2.20, or $2.50 (depending upon the tax processor you use). In other words, your cost to liquidate $500 gift cards will be approximately half a percent. That’s pretty cheap.

If you use $500 Visa/MasterCard gift cards, then you can pay the following amounts:

The biggest problem with this (besides the fact that what works and what doesn’t work keeps changing!) is the IRS imposed 2 payments per processor limit. This means that you can liquidate no more than 6 gift cards per type of tax payment. In the past, Official Payments allowed more.

How to pay taxes via credit card: Key Information

Currently there are three separate payment processing companies on the list. At the time of this writing, debit card fees range from $2.14 to $2.50 per transaction and credit card fees range from 1.82% to 1.98%. Alternatively, you can pay taxes via the Plastiq Bill Pay service, but that will cost you more: 2.9% + $1.49 per payment.

The IRS page that lists options for paying by credit or debit card also lists the following “Additional Information”:

  • No part of the card service fee goes to IRS.
  • You don’t need to send in a voucher if you pay by card.
  • Card processing fees are tax deductible for business taxes.
  • You must contact the card processor to cancel a card payment.
  • IRS will refund any overpayment unless you owe a debt on your account.
[Editor’s caution: In recent years the IRS has been very slow to do so]
  • Your card statement will list your payment as “United States Treasury Tax Payment” and your fee as “Tax Payment Convenience Fee” or something similar.
  • Federal tax lien releases can take up to 30 days after we receive full payment; liens may remain for other individuals who haven’t fully paid their portion.
  • When you pay while filing your taxes through online software, different card fees apply.

Two payment limit per processor

The IRS maintains a table of frequency limits for paying taxes via credit or debit card (found here). In general, they say you can make up to two payments per tax period per type of tax payment. For example, you can make 2 payments every quarter to your quarterly estimated taxes, and you can make 2 payments every year to your annual taxes. Important: In my experience, these limits are enforced per payment processing company. That means that you can really make up to 6 payments per tax period per type of tax payment (or more if you make Plastiq bill payments as well). An IRS advisor I spoke with several years ago did not think that there would be any problem with making more than 2 payments by using different processors. Since then, I have made more than 2 payments per tax period many times and never had any issues. That is, of course, just my own personal experience. I can’t guarantee that your outcome would be the same.

Twice as many potential payments when filing jointly

If you file jointly with a partner, you can make payments in each person’s name, separately. These payments will still apply to the one overall tax return, but not always automatically. According to reader reports, in some cases the IRS matches these payments to the combined return automatically. In other cases, people have reported the need to call the IRS to ask them to combine the payments. I recommend calling shortly after filing your annual taxes to ensure that the IRS has correctly applied both sets of payments to the same return.

Obviously if you are filing separately, you can each make your own payments without any issues.

Unlimited payments via Plastiq

If you’re willing to incur higher fees, you can make an unlimited number of tax payments via the Plastiq bill pay service. Plastiq usually charges 2.9% + $1.49 to pay bills (including taxes) via credit card, but they occasionally offer lower fees via short term promotions. For details, please see: Plastiq Bill Payment Service.

To pay taxes via Plastiq, use Plastiq’s tax payment screen: plastiq.com/us-taxes.

Unlimited business tax payments via Melio

Melio is a bill payment service like Plastiq (see above), but it only allows paying business expenses. If you’re paying taxes for your business, that should be fine. Melio charges a 2.9% fee to pay by credit card.

For details, including the latest Melio welcome offer, see: Melio – Pay business bills by credit card.

Pay with Paypal

All three payment processors now allow payments via PayPal. Sometimes cards like the Discover It, Discover It Student, and Chase Freedom offer 5% rewards for Paypal purchases (up to $1500 combined spend per quarter). Tax payments during these times should count!

NOTE: There is a weird issue with selecting to pay with PayPal on the PayUSATax website. When clicking the PayPal button, a screen flashes up and disappears. Here is a work-around that has worked for some people, but not all: Put in valid credit card information first (for any credit card) and then press the PayPal button. When doing it this way, I got the PayPal screen to successfully load.

Pay with Samsung Pay & Google Pay

Some tax payment websites support mobile wallet payments such as Samsung Pay or Google Pay. The US Bank Altitude Reserve card earns 3X for mobile wallet payments, so it should be a great match. However, readers have reported that Samsung Pay and Google Pay are only supported through Visa Checkout and that this does not trigger the Altitude’s 3X rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be charged a cash advance fee when paying taxes with a credit card?

I’m often asked whether credit card companies charge cash advance fees when paying taxes by credit card. The answer is no. All three official IRS payment processors agree (via their FAQ pages) that the payment is treated as a purchase not a cash advance. You can find FAQ info here, here, and here.

Are tax payment fees deductible?

Fees are no longer deductible for personal taxes: Tax preparation fees used to be deductible when itemizing deductions for personal tax returns, but that is no longer the case.

Card processing fees are tax deductible for business taxes: This can substantially reduce your net cost of using payment services.

How can I see my tax payment history online?

Once you’ve made payments through online processors, Plastiq, or other means, you may want to see proof that the IRS received the amount you sent. You can view past payments by signing up here: irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account.

When should I report estimated tax payments?

Estimated payments should be reported when filing your annual taxes. In my experience, if you make a mistake and forget to report some of these payments, the IRS will eventually catch the error and refund the difference.

How should I pay end of year taxes?

Tell your tax preparer or tax software that you’ll pay via check. Then, browse to the appropriate tax payment site (e.g. Pay1040.com, OfficialPayments.com, PayUSAtax.com, or Plastiq.com/us-taxes) to pay your taxes. There is no need to mail in the 1040V payment voucher.

What happens if I over-pay my taxes?

Overpayments will be refunded: The IRS will refund any overpayment unless you owe a debt on your account. Caution: In recent years the IRS has been very slow to refund overpayments.

How do I request a refund if it doesn’t come automatically?

Schedule an appointment with the Taxpayer Assistance Center by calling 844-545-5640. When you finally speak to an agent, explain that you overpaid and would like a refund rather than applying the extra to next year’s taxes. Hat Tip: Rapid Travel Chai via personal communication.

Do I need to mail in payment vouchers?

No. No payment voucher is required. You don’t need to send in a voucher if you pay by card.

For visibility, in my reply to an older comment yesterday, I call into question the point in the article about Sutton VGCs working at PayUSAtax.com with the “Visa verification” option based on a user comment. As far as I can tell, the person who made that comment got a Sutton VGC to work with Click-to-Pay, but doing so would process the payment as a credit card – not a debit card – which comes with the higher fee and would be no different from simply entering the card info as a credit card or using the card through PayPal. So it doesn’t really work in the sense intended.

I’d be happy to be proven wrong. I think this especially relevant right now with all the holiday VGC sales on, and Sutton being the issuer of all of those cards. MasterCard gift cards issued by Sutton don’t have the same problem of not being recognized as a debit card, but they make come with expiration dates so far into the future as to not be supported by PayUSAtax.com’s interface to actually make payment.

Under “2025 Tax Year Due Dates”, last entry says January 15, 2025 but it should say January 15, 2026.

Has anyone tried paying with a Visa or MC Virtual Account or Visa eGift Card (such as those purchased on Giftcards.com to take advantage of portal bonus)? I can’t recall seeing any DP’s for these. Thanks.

Stoneme

Just got a decline message from payusatax using click-to-pay VGC from Simon : “Error Processing Payment Your transaction is declined by the issuing bank. Please contact your card issuer. To try again with a different card, please click the Back button.” Did anyone see the same issue?

Does Chase freedom still working via PayPal fine as tax payments?

November 2024 experience is that ACI and Pay1040 both accept the Pathward VISA and MasterCard gift cards. PayUSA kept giving me the zip code error so maybe I will try to register it first next time. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I plan to do 2 $1500 Paypal payments this quarter using both my wife and my Freedom cards. These various methods are going to pay for all my Hyatt stays in Europe next year!

When “buying” points, don’t forget to factor in transfer bonuses if applicable.

– 2X card * ($10,000 + $185) = 20370 bank points
– 20370 bank points * 1.25 (25% transfer bonus) = 25462 airlines points
– $185 / 25462 = 0.73 cent per airline point

On a 1.5X card with the same transfer bonus, it works out to be 0.97 cents per airline point

Got the fee updated but need to update the payment amount in the article for debit cards at PayUSATax: “PayUSAtax.com ($2.14 fee): Make a $497.45 payment with a $500 gift card.”

Stephen Pepper

Nice catch, thanks for that – just fixed it.

Thankful

Not sure if this has been addressed in the comments, but there is a non-zero risk that tax payments (both est. taxes and property taxes) made by an Amex card will NOT count towards SUB spending (though they will still earn regular spend-based points).

I just ran into this for the first time recently (after many successful SUB-earning tax payments in the past on Amex cards) with my latest federal est. tax payment via payUSAtax. It should have qualified me for my SUB, but after a longer than typical delay in not seeing the SUB post, I checked with an Amex rep via the online chat tool. He confirmed that I was short of my needed spend by basically the exact amount of my tax payment, and he further noted explicitly that tax payments (both income and property taxes) are treated as “cash equivalents” and thus are excluded from counting towards SUBs (though they can still earn regular points). While this doesn’t seem consistently enforced (given my past successful payments), I also do see that there is plenty of online chatter about this exact same issue arising for others, at least since 2022 (but I think even further). So this isn’t a one off, and I don’t think it’s a case of a misinformed rep. It seems like this is in fact their official policy, even if the system doesn’t enforce is consistently.

At first it didn’t make sense to me why a tax payment would be treated like a “cash equivalent”, since you’re obviously losing purchasing power (unlike when buying a gift card). But obviously some may deliberately overpay their taxes to earn a SUB, knowing they’ll just get the overpaid portion as a tax refund later. So I could better understand where they’re coming from, I guess.

In any case, proceed at your own risk. (I had been planning on using my upcoming property taxes to knock out a SUB on another Amex card. Now I need to reconsider, and likely restrategize.)

Thankful

UPDATE: Well, after all that, the SUB on the card I was referencing came through anyway (without any further purchases on that card). Just took longer than usual to post. So what the chat rep was saying, whether or not true, didn’t end up applying.

I’m still inclined to think reps are in fact trained to say what the rep I spoke with told me, likely reflecting official policy. But I’m also inclined to think that policy is applied less often than not. Still, the online chatter about the issue suggests the risk of tax payments not counting towards Amex SUBs to be non-zero, however small. I’ll probably still be willing to take the risk for now, but that’s just me.

Mikey

curious how long did it take from your tax payment posting to receiving the bonus? It’s been over 10 days for me. Thanks

Thankful

For me it was right around 10 days or so (which was definitely noticeably longer than I had experienced in the past). And I can say since then I’ve hit a couple of other SUBs on Amex cards using tax payments as well (in these cases property taxes), and all of them took somewhere between 9–11 days or so. So again, tax payments still seem to be working for the most part, though the SUBs are taking longer to post. (Have no idea if that’s somehow because tax payments are involved, which I doubt, or not.)

I’m not sure if this makes any difference, but one thing I picked up from the online chatter is that it might be smart to not have your tax payment be the one that actually crosses the MSR target. So I’ve been using tax payments to get me close, but then I’ll use a different small purchase to get me over the line. (But with the original card that I posted about, it was a tax payment that got me over the line. So again, not sure how much this tip matters. Still, I’m heeding it now.)

Hopefully your SUB comes through soon. But it does seem AMEX SUBs are taking longer to post these days, at least for me.

Thankful

The original SUB I posted about took 8–9 days to post. Since then, a few other Amex SUBs (all achieved largely through tax payments, in those cases property taxes) have consistently taken 9–11 days to post. Definitely longer than I recall in the past.

I don’t know if this makes a difference, but from some of the online chatter I mentioned, some have suggested avoiding having your tax payment be the charge that crosses the MSR finish line. So I’ve observed that. But in the case of the original card I mentioned, it definitely was the tax payment that crossed the finish line, and again that SUB did eventually come through.

Mikey

I just received the bonus today, 13 days from payment posting. Thank you for taking time to reply and providing the data point. Cheers.

The section on Paypal only lists PayUSATax and ACI, but the Pay1040 info says it accepts Paypal now, both in the graphic and on their website. I did not confirm that it actually works yet, but I will probably give it a shot in December since Paypal will be a Chase Freedom/Flex 5% category, its fee is less than ACI, and we have 3 of those cards in our household.

Tim Steinke

Thanks, fixed.

Nathan

Vanilla MC works on ACI as of 9/13. No need to register the card beforehand either 🙂
Around me, a Vanilla MC is the cheapest activation fee ($4.94) and they sell at my Walmart Neighborhood Market which codes as grocery for Amex.

SteveH

Tried Vanilla Visa today on ACI as that is what is on special at the local grocery store. Failed. What did you put in for zip code on ACI? Your zip code or something else?

Nathan

I used Vanilla Mastercard not Visa since the FM article said Visa doesn’t work

SteveH

The vanilla visa working seems to come and go so I was hoping it was back to working. I just wasn’t sure if there was some generic vanilla company zip code you were entering on ACI instead of personal zip.

Delaynomore

Got a few 1k Simon visa GC, issued by Sutton today and they all failed to work with the 3 platforms…I believe we only have to activate but not register the cards, does anyone have a recent DP?

anon anon

Sutton worked on PayUsaTax when using the “Visa verification” option (extra button, extra steps to verify/associate you with email/phone, etc)

Kent

If you can please clarify: I don’t see a “Visa verification” button on PayUSAtax’s page when trying to make a payment. Are you referring to the button to the right of the PayPal button that has the Visa, Amex and MC logo? This is the graphic: https://payusatax.com/Content/img/visabutton.svg

Kent

Replying to my own comment to say that if that is the “Visa verification” button you meant, it’s for Click-to-Pay, and while you can enter a prepaid card, it will attempt to process the payment as a credit card (with the higher fee), so it doesn’t really work in the sense that I think most people mean.

I recently married, and have always made estimated tax payments as an individual – including those already made earlier this year. I expect we will file this year as married filing jointly, but need to do more research on this.

For future estimated tax payments – such as what is due before June 17 – does it matter whether I make these as an individual or jointly? And if so, does this mean that we will have to file separately since my earlier payments were made as an individual?

Thanks in advance!

Kelsey stein

First year doing this – so if I made an estimated tax payment on May 10 – that went to q1? Or q2?

Terry

Since it was not made by April 15, it would not meet the due date for the first quarter payment and would be considered a second quarter payment.

Kelsey stein

Ok thank you. That’s what I intended it to be, but the table above confused me with the dates of q2 not starting until 5/15. Thank you!

Terry

Those are the dates that the processors use. I don’t know why they don’t use the same dates as the IRS. It is confusing.

Eric Diner

I would add in regards to the 2 payments per quarter for estimated taxes is that the quarters begin on the following dates (ES taxes can’t be paid before march 1):
1st quarter:   March 1st
2nd quarter:   May 15th
3rd quarter:    July 15th
4th quarter:    October 15th
