Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?
Separately, we posted about a new loyalty program named “Bilt” which is designed to offer rewards for paying rent. But Bilt isn’t the only way to earn rewards from your rent payments. Bigger and better rewards are possible, but maybe not as easy as with Bilt. Here’s a primer on the best ways to earn rewards from paying rent…
Pay Rent with a Credit Card
Bilt Rewards
Bilt Rewards offers a Mastercard credit card which allows paying rent with no fees. It’s possible to earn up to 2 points per dollar on your rent payments, but only if you also spend a considerable amount with the same card on other spend at 1 point per dollar. Rewards from paying rent are capped at 4,000 points per month. Despite that limitation, Bilt is probably the simplest option to earn rewards while paying rent. Plus, Bilt Rewards points can be transferred to a number of loyalty programs in order get even more value. American Airlines and Hyatt are two particularly notable transfer partners. AA is notable because no other transferable points program transfers to AA 1 to 1. Hyatt is notable because their points are usually worth over 1.5 cents each towards hotel stays and sometimes much more. Other transfer partners include Air Canada’s Aeroplan, Air France/KLM FlyingBlue, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Hawaiian Miles, IHG Rewards, Turkish Miles & Smiles, United MileagePlus, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.
More details about Bilt Rewards can be found here.
Plastiq Bill Payment Service
Plastiq is a bill payment service that allows paying almost any bill with a credit card for a fee (currently 2.85%). Plastiq imposes some limits on which types of bills can be paid with different kinds of credit cards, but residential rent payments are allowed with almost any type of credit card. One exception: Capital One doesn’t allow Plastiq payments of any kind with their consumer cards, but they do allow them with their business cards.
When using a rewards credit card to make these payments, you will earn rewards as if it was a regular purchase — you will not incur cash advance fees. Plastiq does not accept prepaid cards or gift cards.
More details about Plastiq can be found here: Complete guide to Plastiq credit card payments.
Landlord Specific Options
Many landlords accept credit card payments, but usually with a fee of around 3%. In some cases, you’ll be offered a flat fee for paying by credit card. In that case, the fee as a percent of spend can be very low if your rent is fairly high.
Earn rewards through welcome bonuses
Many banks offer huge bonuses when you sign up for a new card and meet the minimum spend requirements. For example, it’s common to see an offer for 50,000 points or more after $4,000 spend in 3 months. With these big welcome bonuses, it can be well worth paying Plastiq’s 2.85% fee (or your landlord’s credit card fee, if that’s an option) in order to meet the minimum spend requirements by paying your rent via credit card.
The following list shows the best current welcome bonuses based on our estimate of first year value. First year value estimates include the value of points or other rewards earned minus the first year annual fee and minus the “cost” of the minimum spend (for various reasons, we assume a 3% cost, which is very close to Plastiq’s 2.85% fee). As you can see, rewards earned from welcome bonuses can be huge:

150K Miles ⓘ Affiliate Earn a one-time bonus of 150K miles after $30K spend in the first 3 months$395 Annual Fee Recent better offer: Expired 3/31/23: 250K Miles after $50K in spend. FM Mini Review: Similar to the Venture X consumer card, the business version offers annual rebates that easily mitigate the fee for those who travel often and could be worth it for the lounge access and travel protections given the cost/benefit ratio. Unlike the Venture X, free authorized users do not get Priority Pass access. The card earns 2 "miles" per dollar on most purchases just like the Capital One Venture X Rewards card, which are worth exactly 1 cent each toward travel. This makes the return on most spend similar to a 2% cash back card (though in this case you must redeem your miles to offset travel in order to get 1 cent per mile). One big advantage over cash back: Capital One allows transfering their "miles" to airline miles & hotel points. Click here for our complete card review |

$1,000 Cash Back ⓘ Affiliate $1K after $10K Spend in 3 Months$195 Annual Fee Alternate Offer: Some have been targeted for 150K after $10K spend via mailer or in the "Just for You" section of their online account. FM Mini Review: This is an almost 1 to 1 copy of Capital One's Spark Cash Plus card, but the Chase card throws in 2.5% earnings on very large purchases. Unfortunately, the Chase card also has a slightly higher annual fee. The biggest disappointment about this card is that, unlike other Chase Ink cards, the rewards cannot be moved to other Chase cards to improve their value. Even though this card technically earns Ultimate Rewards points, it's best to think of it as a straight up cash back card. Click here for our complete card review |
175K Points ⓘ Affiliate 175K after $8K spend in first 6 months. Terms apply. (Offer Expires 1/8/2025)$195 Annual Fee Recent better offer: None FM Mini Review: Easy way to secure Hilton Gold status (which offers free breakfast among other perks). 50K Miles ⓘ Friend-Referral 50K after $4,500 spend in 3 months from account openingNo Annual Fee Note: Most Capital One Business credit cards (including this one) DO count against Chase's 5/24 Rule Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: This card is similar to the Spark Cash Select for Business, but rewards are intended to be used to offset travel purchases. This is a good option for business owners who prefer simple rewards with no annual fee, and who value free travel over cash back. If you spend more than $19K per year, though, go for the 2X Spark Miles card. |
$750 Cash Back ⓘ Affiliate Earn a $750 cash bonus when you spend $7,500 within the first 3 months. $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95 FM Mini Review: A good option for business owners who prefer simple cash back rewards. |
$750 Cash Back ⓘ Non-Affiliate $750 cash back after $6000 spend on the account owner's card in first 150 daysNo Annual Fee Keep in mind that only spend on the Account Owner's card counts toward minimum spending requirements, spend on employee cards does not count. Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: Nice welcome bonus. Useful for its 3% categories, but you can do much better for spend outside of those categories. |
60K points + Free Night Certificate ⓘ Friend-Referral 60K points + 50K free night certificate after $2K in the first 3 months. Terms apply. No Annual Fee This card is subject to Chase's 5/24 rule (click here for details). Recent better offer: 50K points after $1K in the first 3 months and 50K points after 6 eligible paid nights at Bonvoy hotels. (expired 8/9/23) FM Mini Review: The best use for this card is probably to downgrade from the Ritz or Boundless card to avoid the annual fee. That way, you can always upgrade again when you need the annual free night or other perks |
75K Points ⓘ Non-Affiliate 75K points after $2K spend in first 6 months (Offer Expires 1/8/2025)$75 Annual Fee Recent better offer: Expired 7/11/24: 100K after $2K in spend FM Mini Review: Not bad, but the business version is better. |
Up to 60K Miles ⓘ Non-Affiliate Up to 60K miles: 50K bonus miles after spending $4K in first 90 days + additional 10K miles after a purchase is made on an employee card in the first 90 days$99 Annual Fee FM Mini Review: This card is almost identical to the JetBlue Plus card except that this one offers Group A boarding and earns 2X at office supply stores rather than grocery stores. Both cards are great choices for JetBlue flyers. |
Up to 100K miles ⓘ Non-Affiliate Up to 100K miles: Earn 60K bonus miles after $4.5K spend in first 90 days + 40K miles after $25K total spend in first 12 months$249 Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: If you were already interested in a LifeMiles+ subscription, this card might be appealing since it only costs $9 more than the cost of 12 months of the "Lite" subscription (or you can enjoy the same annual $240 in value toward higher subscription levels with a $20 monthly discount). It could be worth getting the card for the Silver Elite benefits if you would have considered buying a LifeMiles+ subscription anyway. However, for ongoing spend, it is less compelling given the fact that many transferable currency cards offer superior return on spend. |

The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: This card offers a decent cash back bonus and nice ongoing perks for a card with no annual fee. None ⓘ Non-Affiliate No bonus at this time.$400 Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. 15K Points ⓘ Affiliate 15K points after $1,500 spend in 90 daysNo Annual Fee FM Mini Review: A decent-ish no annual fee card, given the 5x and 3x categories. Points are are only worth .85 cents each, so really the 5x is 4.25x and the 3x is 2.55x. There's probably better options out there. |
None ⓘ Non-Affiliate This card no longer features a first-year bonus. No Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: Good cash back card for everyday spend as long as you do not spend more than $20K per billing cycle (at which point a 2% card would be better). Lack of foreign transaction fees is a positive. |
None ⓘ Non-Affiliate 0% Intro APR for 18 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.24% - 28.999%.No Annual Fee This card is subject to Chase's 5/24 rule (click here for details). Even though this card is marketed as a cash back card, it actually earns Ultimate Rewards points which are redeemable for 1 cent each, or can be combined with other Ultimate Rewards-earning cards to get even more value. This product is available to you if you do not have this card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months. Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. No Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. After that, a variable rate will apply. No Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: Although this is marketed as a travel card, it's really cashback, since the rewards can be used for travel, a statement credit or an ACH transfer at the same rate. 3% back on dining, travel and gas is pretty good for a no annual-fee card, especially with no foreign transaction fees. |
0% APR on balance transfers ⓘ Non-Affiliate 0% APR on balance transfers for first 12 billing cycles following account opening when balance is transferred within the first 90 days No Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: Decent cash back card in the three bonus categories, although the $8k annual limit in spending across those categories will be less exciting for many. |
3% back for 12 months ⓘ Non-Affiliate 3% cash back for 12 months on up to $20K in purchasesNo Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: While the headline is 3% back for a year, the bonus itself is an extra 1.5% back on up to $20K in purchases for the first year. That's certainly not a bad return on otherwise unbonused spend, but many other cards on the market that offer even moderately good welcome bonuses offer greater net return with significantly less spend. |
None ⓘ Non-Affiliate There is currently no welcome bonus offered. No Annual Fee Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: This card could be a good option for someone looking for a 2% cash back Mastercard, though keep in mind that the Citi DoubleCash is a competitor that earns at the same rate while offering points which could become transferable to airline partners, whereas the SoFi credit card only earns cash back rewards. |

None ⓘ Affiliate There is no official welcome bonus, but this card offers the opportunity to earn 1x points on rent when you make at least 5 transactions per billing cycle. Terms apply. No Annual Fee Note that some people see a targeted offer in the Bilt Rewards app to earn 5x points for the first 5 days after being approved and receiving and activating the card. This is not guaranteed, but rather is targeted. Select 'Click Here to Apply' to learn more about the product features, terms and conditions. FM Mini Review: If you pay rent and haven't been earning rewards, this card is a no-brainer as you can pay your rent and earn rewards with no annual fee. A surprisingly good set of transfer partners makes the rewards for using this for rent worth getting the card for that main purpose alone (as long as you remember to use the card 5 times per month). |
No Welcome Bonus ⓘ Non-Affiliate $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95 Note that the card is only currently available with an M1 Plus membership (membership is free the first year, then $125 per year). The credit card's $95 annual fee is waived with an M1 Plus membership. Note also that the fine print says that the bonus will be paid out within 120 days of the end of the intro offer period. This means the welcome offer could be paid out as late as July 29, 2022. Information about this card has been collected independently by Frequent Miler. The issuer did not provide the details, nor is it responsible for their accuracy. FM Mini Review: Might be appealing for cash back bonus hunters who can make use of the 5% and 10% bonus categories, but the $200 monthly limit on earned cash back rewards could be annoying to track. |

Earn spend bonuses: elite status, free nights, etc.
Many credit cards offer bonuses for meeting high spend thresholds. You can find a comprehensive list here: Best big spend bonuses. Whether or not it makes sense paying Plastiq’s fee in order to reach these thresholds depends upon how much you value elite status or other rewards earned.
Here are a few examples:
- World of Hyatt: Earn one free Cat 1-4 night certificate after $15K spend in a calendar year, plus get 2 elite qualifying night credits with each $5K of spend. $15,000 of rent paid through Plastiq would cost $427.50 in fees. If you care about elite status, that’s not a bad price for 6 elite nights, a free night, and 15,000 Hyatt points.
- Amex Delta Reserve or Delta Reserve Business: Spend $30,000, get 15,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles (towards elite status). At $60,000, $90,000, and $120,000 you’ll get another 15,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles. To help you decide if it’s worth paying fees to meet these thresholds, see: What is Delta elite status worth?
- Amex Delta Platinum or Delta Platinum Business: Spend $25,000, get 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles (towards elite status). At $50,000 spend, get another 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles. To help you decide if it’s worth paying fees to meet these thresholds, see: What is Delta elite status worth?
- Southwest Plus, Southwest Premier, Southwest Priority, Southwest Premier Business, or Southwest Performance Business: With Southwest, when you earn 125,000 points in a calendar year (including points earned from credit card spend) you get a companion pass good for an unlimited number of flights for the rest of that year and all of the next calendar year.
- Barclaycard JetBlue Plus, or JetBlue Business: Spend $50,000 and get Mosaic status which offers free checked bags; expedited security; early boarding; free drinks; enhanced point earnings; and 15,000 bonus points upon qualifying.
Earn rewards through spend
Not many cards earn rewards worth more than 2.85% when not considering welcome bonuses, bonus categories, or big-spend bonuses, but there are a few. Based on our estimated point values (Reasonable Redemption Values), you can earn up to 3.1% with the right card. That said, that’s such a small increment in value over Plastiq’s 2.85% fee that I wouldn’t recommend bothering with this unless you need the points for an even more valuable award.
The following table shows the cards that earn the best rewards for spend that is not within a bonus category. Actually, if you press “next” often enough, you’ll find all of the cards in our database, but the first ones are those that offer the best rewards for everyday spend.

Conclusion
Bilt Rewards offers the easiest path to earning rewards when paying rent. You can do significantly better, though, by regularly signing up for new credit cards and using your rent spend to earn welcome bonuses. In some cases, even without a welcome bonus, it can make sense to pay Plastiq’s fees in order to earn “big-spend” bonuses such as elite status, free nights, companion tickets, etc.
@Another Jeff
Can confirm. My apartment is a flat fee for using a credit/debit card, and it’s less than the commonly accepted value of the points I get for using a credit card to pay the rent so I feel like I’m coming out ahead for a monthly expense I have to pay anyways.
Only downside is they don’t take Amex so I can’t use my BBP for 2x points. Have to settle for 1.5x with the CFU.
Good to note, some apartment complexes charge flat fee for Debit/VGC. Do spend in bonuses categories and pay with VGC. Ymmv whether or not VGC will process through with their payment provider, so do test run first. For me 5.95+7.95=13.90/505.95->%2.75. If you can get no fee VGC even better.
Good tip
Are the free nights for the $5K spend levels also limited to category 1-4 hotels?
Personally I haven’t found much use at those levels.
With the Hyatt card, you get 2 elite qualifying nights with $5K spend. These are not free nights. These are simply counters to help you get closer to the next elite status threshold.
I have an Ink Business Plus card. We live in the Metro Detroit area. Our former apartment complex was owned by York Properties. They have a lot of properties in the Metro Detroit/Ann Arbor area.
We found that we could pay our rent through their online payment portal and it coded as an internet/cable/phone charge. We got 5% cash back each month for a couple of years. It worked out well because the fee charged was 3.5%, so we netted 1.5% in points each month.
We no longer rent there, so our little monthly bonus is gone, lol. This was about 2 years ago, so YMMV now. It might be worth a try for anyone living in one of their complexes that has the 5% internet/cable/phone cash back category on a Chase Business Card.
Great tip, thanks.
