The best points rewards programs, in our opinion, are those that allow points to be transferred to many different airline and hotel loyalty programs. In this way, it’s often possible to get outsized value from your points. For example, suppose you want to fly lie-flat business class to Europe. Prices from the US are typically $3,000 or more. If you use a point program to pay with points for that airfare, you’ll pay 300,000 points when points are worth 1 cent each or 200,000 points when points are worth 1.5 cents each (as with the Chase Sapphire Reserve or US Bank Altitude Reserve). If you can find award availability for those same flights, though, the same flights will typically cost 140,000 miles or less… Sometimes much less (depending on the airline program).
One way you can get even better value is to take advantage of transfer bonuses. Every now and then a transferable points program will offer a bonus: you’ll get more miles or points than usual by transferring points to a particular airline or hotel program. Similarly, airlines sometimes offer bonuses for transferring points from hotel programs. Usually transferring hotel points to airline programs doesn’t offer good value, but every now and then we’ll see a good deal.
This page is designed to always show current point transfer bonuses. Please keep in mind that we list all transfer bonuses regardless of whether or not we consider them a good deal. In general you should only transfer from a transferable points program if you have a specific high value use in mind for the transferred miles or points.
